xAI makes Grok Imagine video generator free for everyone

Published Reach 59

Elon Musk just announced that xAI is making Grok Imagine, its AI image and video generator, free worldwide for a limited time. Available on iOS and Android, the tool creates 15-second clips with sound—a feature OpenAI's Sora still lacks. Alongside opening Grok 4 to free users, xAI is seizing the moment to peel creators away from rivals.

While OpenAI is busy putting out fires over GPT-5, Elon Musk is handing out free compute to anyone willing to switch sides.

Musk announced on X that xAI's image and video generation tool, Grok Imagine, is now free for all users worldwide for a limited time. Alongside it, xAI has quietly opened up its flagship Grok 4 model to non-paying users, turning what was a tightly gated subscription tier into a global test drive.

Fast clips with sound, minus the spicy mode

Grok Imagine rolled out earlier this month as a perk for SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers on iOS and Android. Its main claim to fame is speed, but the real technical edge is that its 15-second AI videos include native audio right out of the box, a feature OpenAI's Sora has yet to deliver.

Free users don't get the whole toy box, though. The infamous Spicy mode, which triggered headlines for generating mature and explicit imagery, appears disabled on free accounts, along with presets like Fun and Custom. In hands-on testing, free users can generate images or upload their own photos to animate within seconds, but they cannot attach text prompts to guide the video generation like paying subscribers can.

xAI's guardrails also look notably looser than the competition. Testers quickly found that Grok Imagine willingly generates and animates recognizable public figures and copyrighted characters. While tools like Google's Veo 3, Runway, and Sora strictly ban prompts featuring real-life people, Grok Imagine lets them through with minimal friction.

Kicking OpenAI while GPT-5 is down

The free push isn't just about video. Free users can now access the Grok 4 reasoning model via auto routing, which kicks tough prompts up to Grok 4, or by manually toggling an expert mode. While xAI promised generous temporary limits, reports indicate free quotas could sit around five queries a day or ten messages every 12 hours.

The timing is hardly an accident. OpenAI is facing fierce community backlash over GPT-5, with Reddit and X users slamming the new model as sterile, overly filtered, and creativity-starved, earning it the unflattering nickname of a corporate beige zombie. Even as OpenAI scrambled to restore GPT-4o access and raise rate limits for paying customers, xAI pounced on the dissatisfaction to pitch Grok 4 as a sharper, less preachy alternative.

Why it matters

We think this is classic Elon Musk playbook: capitalize on a competitor's stumble by breaking down the paywall and giving away the fun stuff. For everyday creators, a free video generator that churns out 15-second clips with native audio is an immediate win, even with the lack of secondary prompting in the free tier. It is genuinely worth testing right now simply to see how fast video models have become.

However, the strategy carries serious long-term baggage. By letting users animate real celebrities and copyrighted characters almost without restriction, xAI is running straight toward a legal and reputational minefield. Rivals built strict safety filters not because they hate fun, but because enterprise customers and copyright owners demand them. xAI might win the viral culture war this week, but loose guardrails could severely cap its appeal beyond social media buzz.
