xAI drops Grok Imagine 1.0 with 720p video and better audio
xAI just rolled out Grok Imagine 1.0, upgrading its video generator with 10-second clips, 720p resolution, and dramatically better audio. The company also revealed that Imagine generated over 1.245 billion videos in the last 30 days alone. It is a solid quality bump for a tool already seeing massive viral volume.

While most AI video players have spent the last year fighting over cinematic lighting and Hollywood-tier fidelity, xAI just chose sheer volume and aggressive price warfare.
xAI officially launched Grok Imagine 1.0 alongside the Grok Imagine API. According to the company, Imagine has generated a staggering 1.245 billion videos in the last 30 days alone. Elon Musk even chimed in, claiming the tool now outputs more images and videos than all other competitors combined.
Top scores at bargain rates
The model did not just make noise on social media; it debuted at No. 1 on Artificial Analysis leaderboards for both text-to-video and image-to-video. In Arena’s Video Arena, it currently sits right behind Veo 3 and Sora Pro.
Specs-wise, Imagine 1.0 unlocks 720p resolution, 10-second generations, and significantly improved native audio. The newly released API allows outputs up to 15 seconds across text-to-video, image-to-video, and direct video editing workflows.
Then comes the real punch: pricing. Grok Imagine costs $4.20 per minute with audio baked in. That heavily undercuts the competition, where Google charges $12 per minute for Veo 3.1, and OpenAI sits at $30 per minute for Sora 2 Pro.
More than just prompt-and-pray
Beyond raw generation, xAI packed in a suite of targeted editing capabilities designed for actual production workflows.
Users can now swap specific objects inside a clip, restyle entire scenes, shift backgrounds on command, and animate characters using custom performances. Instead of rerolling an entire prompt when a background looks off, creators get targeted levers to tweak scenes iteratively.
Why it matters
We think xAI made a brilliantly practical move here. Rather than obsessing over an unreachable standard of pristine 4K video, it focused on what developers and real-world creators actually care about: iteration speed, native audio, and cheap compute.
At $4.20 per minute, Imagine turns video generation into an everyday utility instead of an expensive gamble. If you are building an app or producing high-volume social content, burning budget on $30-per-minute Sora calls just stopped making sense when Imagine sits right near it on the benchmark charts.
That said, there are obvious trade-offs. The 720p cap means it is not ready to replace professional broadcast pipelines, and 10 to 15 seconds still limits narrative pacing. But by pairing competent quality with cut-throat pricing, xAI is going to force both Google and OpenAI to defend their margins very quickly.
