Grok code hints at Midjourney integration

Published Reach 36

Grok's standalone web codebase was just found to contain direct references to Midjourney, backing up earlier rumors of a partnership between xAI and the leading image platform. If true, Grok 1.5 could soon leverage Midjourney via API to output visuals, alongside upcoming image upload and vision capabilities.

Codebases don't keep secrets for long, and this time xAI is in the spotlight.

Back in February, rumors circulated that xAI was in active talks with Midjourney about a potential partnership. Following radio silence for months, fresh references to Midjourney have now surfaced directly within the codebase of the standalone Grok web client.

Midjourney under the hood

It was already known that xAI was developing image generation features for Grok. But these newly uncovered code snippets point to Grok directly hooking into Midjourney models via an API.

Midjourney remains the gold standard for artistic flair and photorealism, yet its reliance on Discord has frustrated everyday users for years. Feeding Midjourney directly into Grok's conversational interface would instantly upgrade Grok's creative chops without requiring users to leave the app.

Vision capabilities on deck

Code changes also show that the standalone version of Grok will soon let users upload images. This signals that full vision comprehension is right around the corner.

These additions are expected to arrive as part of the Grok 1.5 rollout, which has already begun hitting users across X and the dedicated Grok client.

Why it matters

For regular users and creators, this means you might soon generate top-tier Midjourney art right inside Grok without messing around with Discord commands or separate subscription setups.

Strategically, we think xAI partnering instead of waiting on a homegrown model is a clever shortcut. Training a multimodal visual model from scratch takes absurd amounts of compute and time. While OpenAI and Google push forward with unified, in-house architectures, xAI is opting for immediate quality to keep pace in the chatbot race.

The downside, however, is dependency. Relying on an external API for a headline feature leaves xAI vulnerable to Midjourney's latency, pricing whims, and platform stability. It looks like Musk's priority is shipping features fast to juice engagement, even if it means renting the engine for now.
