X eyes Midjourney partnership for AI image generation
Elon Musk's X is reportedly exploring a partnership with text-to-image generator Midjourney. If finalized, the deal could integrate Midjourney's visual capabilities directly into Grok, letting users generate and post images right from their feeds. While details remain sparse, the feature will likely be locked behind an X Premium subscription.

OpenAI just stole the spotlight with its Sora text-to-video model, and Elon Musk might be preparing an answer for his own platform.
According to a post by insider DogeDesigner, Musk's social network X is currently exploring a potential deal or partnership with the popular AI image generator Midjourney. Android Headlines first reported on the talks.
While details remain sparse, the move appears closely tied to Grok, the AI chatbot built into X.
Midjourney inside your feed
Grok is still in its early days and currently limited to X Premium+ subscribers in the United States. Right now, it's strictly conversational, lacking the native image creation features that OpenAI bundles with ChatGPT via DALL-E.
Midjourney, known across the industry for unmatched photorealism and artistic detail, could immediately fix that blind spot.
If a deal materializes, users could soon type a prompt like "a horse dancing in the rain" directly into a composer box, generate the picture, and post it immediately without ever leaving X.
Meta recently added AI background editing tools to Instagram, but an integrated Midjourney setup would be a much bigger leap, generating entirely new images from scratch.
Access would almost certainly be behind a paywall. X currently runs three tiers: Basic, Premium, and Premium+. Heavy computing costs mean image generation would likely remain an exclusive perk for top-tier subscribers.
The election-year minefield
Putting hyper-realistic image generation directly into the world's most chaotic public square comes with serious baggage.
Content on X travels at breakneck speed. Handing millions of users one-click access to Midjourney could cause AI-generated fabrications to flood the platform almost instantly.
With major democratic elections on the horizon, including the US Presidential contest and India's general elections, the timing could hardly be more sensitive.
Observers widely expect that X will need to implement prominent AI watermarks or labels if the partnership actually launches.
Why it matters
We think partnering rather than building in-house is a clever tactical pivot for Musk. Training a world-class diffusion model from scratch would burn immense compute and engineer hours that his AI team could better spend improving core reasoning in Grok. Borrowing Midjourney's industry-leading aesthetic instantly puts X on visual parity with OpenAI.
For regular users and creators, this could be the single biggest reason yet to actually pay for an X subscription. Midjourney's current Discord interface is clunky and unintuitive for mainstream audiences. Bringing it directly into a social feed could democratize the tool overnight.
However, the risks look massive. Both Midjourney and X have taken a notoriously loose approach to content moderation and copyright friction. Combining Midjourney's realistic output with X's viral mechanics right before global elections looks like a recipe for regulatory blowback, unless the platform rolls out serious guardrails before launch.
