Gemini brings smarter replies to Gmail

Published Reach 35

Google just rolled out Gemini-powered contextual Smart Replies to Gmail on Android and iOS. Instead of generic one-liners, the AI analyzes the entire email thread to draft detailed responses complete with greetings and sign-offs. Why it matters: It turns quick replies into genuinely usable drafts, though it is currently limited to English and paid Gemini subscribers.

Google is rolling out a Gemini-powered upgrade to Gmail's Smart Replies on Android and iOS. First previewed back in May, the new contextual Smart Replies go well beyond the classic one-liners from 2017.

Beyond generic one-liners

Instead of short phrases like "Working on it" or "Thanks for the heads up," Gemini reads the entire email thread to generate longer, context-aware suggestions.

Users can hover over suggested replies to preview them, pick the draft that matches their writing style, and either tweak the wording or hit send immediately. The suggestions even include initial greetings and signoffs.

For now, the feature is English-only and limited to paying customers: Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.

Why it matters

This is how generative AI actually belongs in everyday software. Instead of forcing users to prompt a blank chatbot window, Google is placing contextual assistance right where the actual work happens.

For anyone buried under a relentless inbox, receiving fully formed drafts with greetings and signoffs saves meaningful time.

That said, keeping the feature strictly behind a paywall and limited to English narrows its reach. Google appears to be using these small, high-frequency convenience features as prime bait to convert free Gmail users into paid AI subscribers.
