Gemini arrives in Gmail’s side panel

Published Reach 38

Google just rolled out Gemini directly into the Gmail side panel on the web. The assistant can summarize messy email threads, draft replies, and answer specific questions by digging through your inbox and Google Drive files without leaving the page. It is rolling out to Workspace add-on and Google One AI Premium subscribers.

Opening up a work inbox on Monday morning usually means spending half your time playing detective just to find an invoice number buried in a 20-reply thread.

Google is rolling out a dedicated Gemini side panel directly inside the web version of Gmail, alongside new quick-action summaries on mobile.

Instead of just a floating prompt inside the composer, Gmail now gets a persistent assistant on the right side of your screen, triggered by clicking the "Ask Gemini" star icon in the top right corner.

Inbox Q&A meets Google Drive

Gmail's traditional search bar has long been hit-or-miss when you need specific data points from past threads.

The Gemini side panel changes how you retrieve information. Beyond summarizing messy threads and drafting replies, it can actively answer open-ended questions by querying both your inbox and your Google Drive files.

For instance, you can ask prompts like "What was the PO number for my agency?", "How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?", or "When is the next team meeting?".

Gemini digs through your emails and connected Drive docs to surface the exact answer right beside your active window, eliminating the need to juggle multiple tabs.

On mobile, the rollout takes the form of a streamlined "summarize this email" chip that appears directly atop long email threads.

Who actually gets access

Don't expect to see this automatically on standard free Gmail accounts.

Access requires an eligible paid plan, including Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons, or a consumer Google One AI Premium subscription.

Admins and end-users also need to have Google's smart features and personalization settings turned on for the assistant to legally and technically read across workspace data.

The web side panel began rolling out to Rapid Release domains on June 24, while Scheduled Release domains will start seeing it on July 8. Mobile rollouts across domains also started June 24 and can take up to 15 days to show up.

Why it matters

Most workplace AI integrations fail because they force users into an awkward standalone chat tab.

Google's side-panel design is smart because it brings the model directly to where the work happens. Pulling context simultaneously from both Gmail and Google Drive addresses a genuine everyday headache: tracking down elusive operational details without leaving your draft.

For busy teams, having an assistant pull purchase order numbers and budget tallies on the fly makes the Workspace Gemini add-on look significantly more practical than generic text generators.

However, the stakes are exceptionally high here. In business correspondence, misquoting a contract figure or PO number due to a model hallucination can cause real operational damage, meaning users will still have to double-check sources.

With Microsoft pushing Copilot deeply into Outlook, Google is turning Gmail into an active workspace dashboard rather than just an email client. If the retrieval accuracy holds up, it could fundamentally shift how enterprise users navigate their day.
