Google is replacing dynamic search ads with AI Max

Published Reach 38

Google is retiring Dynamic Search Ads in favor of AI Max, promising an average 7% bump in conversions at similar cost. After advertiser pushback, Google delayed the automatic DSA migration to February 2027, though auto-created asset campaigns will still upgrade starting September 2026. Advertisers can switch manually now to keep tighter control.

If you manage Google Ads, you know Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) have long been the safety net for catching long-tail queries that your keyword lists missed.

Now, that familiar safety net is being retired. Google announced that search campaigns are transitioning to AI Max, a broader automated system designed to replace legacy DSA, automatically created assets (ACA), and campaign-level broad match settings.

From keyword scraping to intent prediction

AI Max is officially leaving beta after being tested by hundreds of thousands of advertisers. Google claims the upgrade provides much more than simple landing page crawling.

By layering real-time user intent signals over website content and ad copy, the system tries to capture queries that advertisers never thought to target. Google says campaigns using the full suite of AI Max features — search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion — see an average 7% lift in conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS compared to matching search terms alone.

To keep advertisers from feeling entirely sidelined, Google is adding controls for brand guidelines, geo-targeting, and copy parameters.

Pushing the deadline to 2027

Originally, the migration was set to sweep through accounts starting in September 2026. But advertisers pushed back, asking for more time to protect campaign stability and audit their setups.

Google listened and split the timeline. Automatic upgrades for legacy Dynamic Search Ads are now delayed until February 2027, giving teams another half-year to adjust their workflows.

However, other automated elements aren't waiting. Campaigns relying on automatically created assets (ACA) and campaign-level broad match will still be automatically upgraded starting in September 2026. Creating new legacy DSA campaigns across Google Ads, the Editor, and the API will also be shut off that month.

Google is rolling out manual migration tools this week, encouraging marketers to switch early rather than waiting for the automatic push.

Why it matters

This move marks another milestone in the steady erosion of manual PPC management. Search marketing is shifting from tweaking bids on exact keywords to defining high-level boundaries for an AI system.

We think Google made a smart concession by delaying the DSA migration to 2027. DSA setups are often deeply entangled with complex product feeds and enterprise landing pages, and breaking them during Q4 would have caused an advertiser revolt. Pushing DSA back while moving ACA forward keeps momentum without breaking budgets during the holiday rush.

For media buyers, waiting until February 2027 to see what happens is a risky bet. The smarter move is using the new migration tools now to run side-by-side experiments, figure out where the brand guardrails fail, and get comfortable steering the model before Google flips the switch for good.
