ChatGPT opens scheduled tasks to free users and adds app triggers

Published Reach 41

ChatGPT just upgraded scheduled tasks on web and mobile. Free users can now create up to three automated routines, while Plus and Pro subscribers get reactive triggers tied to changes in Slack, Gmail, and GitHub instead of running solely on fixed timers. Users can also share their favorite workflows for others to customize.

AI is finally learning to act on cues instead of just watching the clock. OpenAI rolled out an upgrade to scheduled tasks in ChatGPT across web and mobile, moving the feature beyond simple timers.

Moving from fixed timers to real-time triggers

For Plus and Pro subscribers, tasks can now trigger automatically when activity happens inside Slack, Gmail, or GitHub. Instead of running on a rigid daily schedule, the model can jump into action whenever something changes in your workflow. OpenAI pointed to practical use cases like generating weekly shipping summaries or scanning your inbox for money-saving opportunities.

At the same time, OpenAI is rolling out scheduled tasks to free users for the first time, with a cap of up to three tasks.

Users can also now share their favorite task setups with others, allowing teammates or friends to adopt and customize them.

Why it matters

We think this quietly pushes ChatGPT closer to a true background automation engine rather than just a chat interface.

Previously, reacting to a new email or a fresh code commit required stitching together tools like Zapier. Bringing native event triggers for GitHub, Gmail, and Slack directly into ChatGPT makes hands-off automation much more accessible for everyday workers and developers.

Giving free users three tasks is a smart hook to build reliance on always-on AI assistants. The current roster of integrations is still quite small, but it shows OpenAI is serious about embedding its agent directly into your daily work loop.
