ChatGPT brings custom instructions to free users

Published Reach 52

OpenAI just rolled out its custom instructions feature to all users, including the free tier on web, iOS, and Android. It lets you set response preferences, tone, and role context once so you don't repeat yourself in every prompt. Steerability is officially becoming a default expectation rather than a paid perk.

If you've ever felt like a broken record typing the exact same constraints into ChatGPT at the start of every single chat, OpenAI finally has some relief for you.

OpenAI just announced that it is rolling out its custom instructions feature to all users, including those on the free tier. The feature originally debuted in July as a beta test exclusively for $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

Giving ChatGPT permanent memory of your quirks

Custom instructions basically give you steerability without repeating yourself every morning. You can set persistent background info and specific response preferences that the AI will automatically factor into every response.

OpenAI shared a few practical use cases. A 3rd-grade teacher designing lesson plans no longer has to constantly type out that they teach 8-year-olds to get age-appropriate phrasing. Developers can tell the bot to strictly output code in their preferred language while eliminating languages they hate.

Beyond tone adjustments and character limits, the rollout comes with two key updates. It is available across both web and the official iOS and Android apps, and it now functions even when chat history is toggled off.

To set it up, tap your profile name and select "Custom instructions." For now, users in the European Union and the UK will have to wait a bit longer, though OpenAI says expansion there is coming soon.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this removes the single biggest friction point of using ChatGPT. Prompt engineering was always tedious, and casual users rarely took the time to write proper system prompts before asking a question. Getting persistent context on the free tier turns a sterile, generic chatbot into a genuinely personalized coworker with zero recurring cost.

From a competitive standpoint, this is a massive retention move. Once you spend time tuning an AI to your workflow, tone, and technical constraints, switching over to Claude or other alternatives starts to feel painful. OpenAI essentially just added high switching costs directly into the free product.

That said, a single global instruction box is far from perfect. If you use ChatGPT to draft strict technical documentation by day and write bedtime stories for your kids by night, a blanket set of preferences will inevitably clash. OpenAI will almost certainly need to introduce per-project or per-persona profiles down the line.
