OpenAI opens custom GPTs to free users
OpenAI just opened custom GPTs, data analytics, and vision features to all free ChatGPT users. Anyone can now explore and chat with community-made bots or analyze files from cloud storage, though building your own GPT still requires a paid tier. Once free users hit message caps on GPT-4o, conversations automatically drop back to GPT-3.5.

OpenAI just unlocked a massive batch of formerly paid tools for everyone using the free tier of ChatGPT.
Free users can now tap into features introduced with GPT-4o in early May. That includes vision capabilities, file uploads, data analytics, chart creation, web browsing, and Memory, which helps the bot remember your context across conversations.
The paywall drops, with a few catches
Perhaps the biggest change is access to the GPT Store. Free users can now discover and run third-party Custom GPTs, ranging from Ikea shopping guides to specialized writing assistants. However, if you want to build and publish your own custom bot, you still need a paid subscription.
Free users can also link their Google Drive and OneDrive accounts directly to ChatGPT for quick spreadsheet breakdowns. The catch is message limits: once free users hit their GPT-4o cap, the system automatically drops them back to the older GPT-3.5 model. Paying subscribers still get significantly higher usage ceilings. Meanwhile, the controversial Sky voice remains offline for all tiers after the Scarlett Johansson dispute.
Why it matters
We see this as a classic land-grab move by OpenAI. By handing out advanced multimodal and data analytics tools for free, they make it much harder for rivals like Anthropic or Google to convert casual users into paid customers.
It is also a huge boost for builders participating in the revenue-sharing scheme tested since March, as their potential audience just exploded overnight. But don't expect a completely frictionless ride: running out of GPT-4o messages and getting dumped back to GPT-3.5 will likely frustrate power users enough to keep those subscription numbers ticking upward.
