ChatGPT lets you edit Google Drive files without leaving the chat
OpenAI just integrated Google Drive directly into ChatGPT on the web. Users can now open and edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides side by side with the AI without switching tabs. It is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers.

Copying text out of Google Docs, pasting it into ChatGPT, and pasting it back while praying the formatting survives has been the standard AI workflow for way too long.
OpenAI is finally cutting out that middle step. ChatGPT Consumer Product Lead Adam Fry announced on X that paid web users can now open and edit Google Drive files directly inside the chat interface.
Editing the real document in real time
The integration supports Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT Work subscribers.
Getting started is simple enough. You click the plus icon on the left side of the prompt box and select Add from Library to pull in files from your drive.
The most important detail came from Fry's replies on X. He clarified that ChatGPT is actually editing the live file inside Google Drive, rather than spinning up a disconnected static copy. If you still prefer the classic view, there is still a toggle to open the file inside Google's native apps.
Fry also highlighted three other additions landing this week. There is a new interactive quiz generator with multiple choices and hints, a direct Yelp integration for restaurant reservations and waitlists, and curated homepage suggestions for paid members.
Why it matters
For anyone working with documents daily, this removes genuine friction. The cognitive tax of AI work has never just been the prompting; it was the tab switching, manual copy-pasting, and version chaos. Working side-by-side with an agent that can commit changes directly to your file makes ChatGPT feel much more like an operating system than a chatbot.
It is also an aggressive move against Google. Gemini's primary defensive moat has always been its native grip on Workspace apps. By reaching directly into Google Drive and editing files on the fly, OpenAI is neutralizing that platform advantage.
That said, giving an AI live write access to original files comes with real anxiety. If the model hallucinates or misinterprets an instruction, recovering clean revisions could become a headache. Until permission safeguards and visual diffing are rock solid, users will likely keep making manual backups before letting the bot touch critical files.
