Google supercharges Docs and Sheets with Gemini
Google just rolled out a batch of Gemini features across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The AI can now pull context from your emails and files to draft docs matching your style, auto-fill spreadsheets using live web data, and answer questions across Drive files without opening them. It turns scattered personal files into an active workspace assistant.

Staring at a blank document or an empty spreadsheet is one of the most frustrating parts of any workday. Google is trying to kill that friction entirely.
On Tuesday, Google announced a sweeping set of new Gemini-powered updates across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. The beta features are rolling out now to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with Docs, Sheets, and Slides available globally in English, while Drive's updates are starting out in the US.
Instead of just sitting in the sidebar like a glorified chatbot, Gemini is now digging deep into your actual personal context across Gmail, Chat, and Drive to build things from scratch.
Spreadsheets that fill themselves
In Docs, Gemini is tackling the tedious parts of drafting and formatting. A new "Match writing style" tool unifies drafts written by different team members so the whole piece sounds consistent.
Even better, "Match doc format" lets you take an existing template, like a travel itinerary, and tell Gemini to populate it. The AI will dig through your emails to grab your flight times, hotel bookings, and rental car reservations, slotting them directly into the template.
Meanwhile, Sheets is getting a standout feature called "Fill with Gemini." Think of it like smart autofill with access to live Google Search.
If you are putting together a college tracker, you can set up headers for tuition and application deadlines, drag down, and let Gemini fetch the live numbers from the web. You can also ask it to organize an upcoming move, and it will pull mover quotes directly out of your inbox to set up a comparison sheet.
Over in Slides, Gemini can now generate fully editable single slides that match your presentation's existing theme, with whole-deck generation coming down the road. Drive is also adopting Google Search's "AI Overview," putting cited summaries right at the top of search results so you do not have to open five different PDFs to answer a quick question.
Why it matters
We think this is one of Google's smartest Workspace moves yet, mainly because it finally leverages Google's real moat: personal context.
Standalone chatbots can draft a generic essay, but they do not know what moving company quoted you yesterday or when your flight lands. By stitching Drive, Gmail, and live Search into actual spreadsheets and documents, Google is moving from "chat with an AI" to "have an AI do the administrative heavy lifting."
If you already pay for Google AI Ultra or Pro, tools like "Fill with Gemini" are well worth testing immediately. Automated table research alone could save hours of manual googling.
That said, the real trap is accuracy. When an AI pulls live web data into clean spreadsheet cells, it looks authoritative, but subtle hallucinations or outdated numbers can easily slip through. Users still need to double-check the figures before relying on them, meaning the time saved on data entry might partly shift toward proofreading.
