Character.AI just gave its bots a voice and a stage
Character.AI just rolled out a major suite of multimodal creation tools, stepping far beyond 1:1 text chats. The update introduces AvatarFX to animate static character avatars into singing and talking videos, Scenes for pre-set interactive storylines, and Streams to let any two characters riff on a user-chosen topic. Animated chat exports are currently restricted to c.ai+ subscribers.

Staring at a static avatar while text bubbles slowly generate was fun for a while, but text-only chatbots were always destined to hit a ceiling.
Character.AI just rolled out a major suite of multimodal creation tools, aiming to transform the platform from a simple 1-on-1 text chat service into a dynamic, creator-first multimedia ecosystem.
Giving avatars a voice and staging two-bot dramas
The update gives characters a dramatic visual upgrade. A new feature called AvatarFX uses image-to-video technology to animate character profile pictures or arbitrary images with a single click, allowing them to sing, talk, and emote. It is live now on the web and rolling out soon to mobile.
Users can also play director with a new feature called Streams. Instead of chatting directly, you pick two characters, drop them into a topic, and watch them bounce off each other. The company teased that characters will soon begin sharing posts autonomously as well.
For narrative fans, Character.AI launched Scenes on its mobile app, letting users step into pre-built interactive storylines. Creator tools to build and publish custom scenes are scheduled to launch later this summer.
To tie everything together, mobile profiles have been overhauled into showcase spaces, and a TikTok-style scrollable Community Feed is coming soon. Subscribers to c.ai+ also get exclusive access to Imagine Animated Chats, which turns funny chat transcripts into short animations ready for social sharing.
Why it matters
Character.AI is clearly trying to graduate from a text-based companion app to a full-blown AI social network.
We think this pivot makes a ton of sense. Plain text logs are notoriously difficult to share on modern social platforms, but short video clips of two bots roasting each other or a favorite character singing are tailor-made for viral feeds. It transforms passive chatting into shareable user-generated content.
For everyday users, it significantly lowers the friction of having fun on the platform. You no longer have to carry the entire conversation yourself when you can just prompt two agents and sit back with popcorn.
The real test will be video fidelity and creator retention. Image-to-video tools can easily fall into uncanny valley territory, and gating the animated chat generator behind the paid c.ai+ tier might choke off organic meme creation just as the community needs it most.
