Character.AI can now turn your avatars into full videos

Published Reach 50

Character.AI just unveiled AvatarFX, a video generation model that brings static images to life with synchronized speech, singing, and body gestures driven by audio. Built on DiT architecture with distillation for fast inference, it supports multiple speakers and will roll out first to CAI+ subscribers in the coming months.

Character.AI just unveiled AvatarFX, a cinematic video generation model built by its multimodal team that turns any single image into a lifelike, moving, and speaking video.

While most talking-head tools struggle with stiff necks and glitchy hands after just three seconds, AvatarFX aims much higher. It generates audio-driven video where characters do not just talk, but also sing, express nuanced emotions, and move their hands and bodies while keeping temporal consistency intact across longform videos.

Beyond Simple Lip-Sync

The technology is built on a DiT (Diffusion Transformer) flow-based diffusion architecture, paired with Character.AI's proprietary text-to-speech voice engine. Instead of treating lips in isolation, the team designed a parameter-efficient pipeline that synchronizes head turns, facial micro-expressions, and torso movement to the audio track.

Crucially, AvatarFX operates on existing images rather than text prompts, giving creators precise visual control. It also supports multiple speakers taking turns in the same scene, handling realistic humans, 2D anime drawings, 3D cartoons, mythical beasts, pets, and even everyday objects with faces.

To make this affordable for millions of users, the company applied model distillation to cut down the number of diffusion steps, speeding up inference with virtually no drop in visual fidelity. Character.AI plans to roll the feature out to all users in the coming months, with CAI+ subscribers getting first dibs through a waitlist.

Deepfake Guardrails and Strict Bans

High realism always brings deepfake anxiety, especially on a platform centered around interactive roleplay. Character.AI is shipping this release with unusually strict defensive layers.

The system automatically blocks photo uploads of minors, prominent politicians, and notable public figures. If someone uploads a regular human photo, an AI filter modifies the facial features so the person is no longer recognizable.

All generated outputs will carry a visible watermark to signal artificial origins, and text prompts will pass through safety screening. To top it off, Character.AI is imposing a strict one-strike policy: any user caught generating deepfakes, bullying, impersonating others, or violating intellectual property will be kicked out immediately.

Why it matters

Bringing dynamic video to character chatbots feels like a natural yet pivotal evolution for social entertainment AI.

For creators and casual roleplayers, AvatarFX removes an enormous technical barrier. Crafting multi-turn, expressive animations previously demanded full 3D pipelines, motion capture rigging, and dedicated lip-sync rendering. Being able to bring an original 2D character or digital avatar to life with one click transforms a text chat into an interactive mini-show.

Across the industry, this sets a fresh benchmark for companion apps. Plain text responses are rapidly becoming table stakes; multimodal presence with synchronized voice and believable physical gesture is the next retention frontier. Character.AI's choice to lean on model distillation is smart, directly targeting the high GPU serving costs that typically doom video features.

The friction point, in our view, will be usability versus safety. Altering human faces with AI to prevent impersonation is an aggressive safeguard that might frustrate users wanting personalized digital twins. Striking that balance without driving creators away will be the real test once the waitlist opens up.
