Character.AI lets you group chat with multiple AI bots
Character.AI just rolled out Character Group Chat, allowing c.ai+ subscribers to chat with multiple AI personas and human friends in the same room. Users can run text adventure games, host multi-character book clubs, or debate historical figures simultaneously. The feature is currently live on iOS and Android apps, with web support coming soon.

Most of our interactions with AI models still feel like an awkward DM: you type a prompt, it spits out an answer, rinse and repeat. Character.AI is finally breaking that isolation chamber.
The company announced Character Group Chat, a brand-new feature rolling out first to its c.ai+ subscribers that lets multiple AI characters and human friends talk together in a single shared room.
Mixing historical figures and real friends in one room
Basically, imagine a Discord or WhatsApp group where both your friends and fictional personas hang out in real-time.
Users can interact, share ideas, and kick off collaborative roleplays seamlessly. The possibilities get wild pretty fast.
Character.AI tossed out a few wild examples: you could throw Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Nikola Tesla, and Stephen Hawking into a single debate, or see what happens when Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon bicker in group chat.
For gamers and creators, it opens the door to multiplayer text RPGs. You and your buddies can run through a haunted dungeon, or designate an AI named ShipAI to run a spaceship while you act as the crew.
It can also act as a study group or a book club, where you and your classmates bring in Librarian Linda to test your recall or recommend the next chapter.
Mobile-first and paywalled for now
If you want to spin up a group chat right this second, you will need to meet two conditions.
First, this is an early preview rolling out exclusively to paying c.ai+ subscribers over the next few days.
Second, the feature is strictly confined to the iOS and Android mobile apps for now. A web version is planned for the future, but no firm release date has been shared yet.
Why it matters
Shifting from one-on-one prompts to multi-agent environments is the next logical leap for conversational AI, and Character.AI is making it mainstream.
For users, it turns solitary chatbot banter into an active social gaming lounge. Throwing two clashing personas together with a real-life friend creates unpredictability, humor, and organic roleplay that a standard 1-on-1 chat simply cannot replicate.
Strategically, this widens the moat between Character.AI and utilitarian giants like ChatGPT. By emphasizing multiplayer dynamics and community-driven entertainment, Character.AI is building an actual social entertainment network rather than just an answer engine.
We think gating the feature behind c.ai+ is a smart way to drive paid conversions while stress-testing compute limits. Managing context and conversational turn-taking among three or four separate LLM agents is notoriously tricky. If the bots talk over each other or hallucinate a looping conversation, the magic fades fast. How well their orchestration handles the chaos will make or break this feature.
