Character.ai gives your AI chat visuals a dedicated gallery

Published Reach 34

Character.ai just launched Imagine Gallery on its mobile app, bringing every AI visual generated across your chats into a single organized grid. You can now filter creations by Persona, save favorites, and—with the new Imagine Message feature—tap any character prompt to spin up art on the spot. Plus, c.ai+ subscribers can turn images directly into custom chat backgrounds.

If you have spent any real time roleplaying on Character.ai, you know how good the AI can be at bringing an imaginary scene to life. The problem was that once you scrolled past the image, it basically disappeared into a bottomless chat history.

Character.ai is finally fixing that mess with a new mobile feature called Imagine Gallery.

A visual grid for your chats

Imagine Gallery brings every visual you have ever generated on the platform into a clean, dedicated grid inside the mobile app.

You do not have to dig through old threads anymore. Both past and present generations are collected automatically in one place.

From the gallery, you can filter your visuals by Persona to hop between different identities you use across chats. You can also save favorites, copy or download files, and share images directly to the Community Feed or outside the app. For c.ai+ subscribers, there is an extra perk: you can pick any favorite generation straight from the gallery and set it as your chat background.

Turn single messages into scenes

Alongside the gallery, the company rolled out Imagine Message, which lets you generate visuals around specific moments rather than the whole conversation.

When a Character sends a line that sparks your imagination, you can simply tap the image icon on that specific message. The app generates the scene right there, letting you swipe through different variations inside the chat before deciding what to keep.

Just like standard generations, these message-based images automatically land in your Imagine Gallery. Character.ai also noted that while the gallery is launching with static images, it plans to expand the space to support videos, comics, and books created through conversations.

Why it matters

For regular creators and roleplayers, this is a massive quality-of-life update. Generating visuals used to feel like a throwaway novelty buried inside sprawling roleplay logs. Giving those images a dedicated, organized home makes world-building much easier to track.

We think this is a smart pivot for Character.ai. Plain text chatbots are quickly hitting a wall when it comes to long-term engagement. By turning chat prompts into visual assets—and eventually comics and videos—the platform is steadily morphing from a simple companion bot into an interactive storytelling engine.

It also gives rival companion platforms something to worry about. As baseline LLM conversational abilities commoditize, the battle is moving toward multi-modal media generation and curation. Tying chat backgrounds to the c.ai+ paywall is also a clever way to nudge power users toward a subscription without locking out casual experimenters.
