OpenAI signs its biggest bank deal yet
BBVA just expanded its partnership with OpenAI to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to all 120,000 employees across 25 countries. The deployment represents a 10x scale-up following pilots where staff saved nearly three hours per week, with the bank also exploring ways to let retail customers interact with banking services directly through ChatGPT.

Most Fortune 500 companies are still stuck in the pilot phase with generative AI, handing out a few dozen licenses to see what happens. Spanish banking giant BBVA is taking a completely different route.
BBVA and OpenAI just expanded their partnership into a multi-year transformation deal that will roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to all 120,000 global employees across 25 countries. That is a 10x expansion from their previous deployment, marking one of the largest generative AI rollouts in the financial sector to date.
From a 3,300-seat test to 120,000 licenses
This was not an overnight gamble. BBVA first teamed up with OpenAI in May 2024, starting with a controlled test of 3,300 accounts.
After seeing strong adoption, they expanded the program to 11,000 employees. Those workers built thousands of custom GPTs to handle daily workflows. The internal metrics were wild: over 80% of those employees used the tool daily, saving nearly three hours per week on routine work.
Now, the bank is giving enterprise access to every single employee. The rollout includes access to OpenAI's latest models, enterprise-grade privacy controls, and specialized tools to build internal AI agents hooked directly into BBVA's core systems for risk analysis and software development.
Banking directly inside ChatGPT?
The transformation goes beyond internal productivity. BBVA has already deployed Blue, a customer-facing virtual assistant built on OpenAI models that helps clients manage accounts and cards using natural language.
As part of the expanded deal, BBVA is setting up a dedicated team working side-by-side with OpenAI's product and research squads. Even more intriguing: BBVA says it is exploring ways to integrate its banking services directly into ChatGPT, allowing customers to interact with the bank from within the chat interface.
OpenAI noted that it now counts over one million business customers, including Deutsche Telekom, Virgin Atlantic, and Accenture.
Why it matters
We think this deal is a massive proof of concept for generative AI in highly regulated industries. Banks are notoriously cautious buyers. BBVA didn't just buy AI for the hype; they systematically proved the ROI first, expanding from 3,300 to 11,000 seats and citing 80% daily active usage and three hours saved per week before signing a company-wide check.
If BBVA can pull off deep agent integration across 120,000 workers in 25 jurisdictions without running afoul of financial regulators, it removes a major excuse for conservative enterprise IT teams everywhere.
The consumer angle is just as fascinating. If BBVA successfully lets clients manage their finances directly inside ChatGPT, it could bypass traditional banking apps entirely. The real test, however, will be edge-case hallucinations and security. When an AI agent interfaces directly with real money and strict financial compliance, the margin for error is zero.
