Apple sets WWDC 2024 dates to debut iOS 18 AI push

Published Reach 36

Apple just announced that WWDC 2024 will run from June 10 to June 14. The main event will be iOS 18, expected to mark Apple's official push into generative AI with a smarter Siri, automated summarization, and AI code generation inside Xcode. Why it matters: Cupertino is finally ready to show its AI hand.

Apple just made it official: WWDC 2024 kicks off on June 10 and runs through June 14.

While the event will remain mostly virtual with a pre-recorded keynote, Apple is hosting an in-person watch party at Apple Park for lottery winners and 50 standout students from its Swift Student Challenge.

Everyone knows this year's show is really about one thing: Apple finally revealing its hand in generative AI.

Siri's makeover and AI in Xcode

The software lineup is familiar: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and macOS 15, alongside the first major feature update for visionOS following the Vision Pro's debut.

Rumors suggest iOS 18 will bring UI tweaks, but the real meat is in generative AI. Apple is working on major upgrades for Siri and automated summarization features baked directly into core apps.

Developers might get the biggest treat of all. Internal test versions of Xcode reportedly include generative AI capabilities that predict and complete entire blocks of code, as well as generate automated test cases.

Apple is seemingly aware that stability cannot take a backseat. Back in November, the company reportedly paused new feature development for an entire week just to squash bugs across iOS 18 and macOS.

On the hardware front, an M3 Ultra chip could make its debut, with an updated Mac Studio standing as the most likely candidate for a mid-year refresh.

Why it matters

For everyday users and developers, iOS 18 will test whether Apple can deliver AI features that feel seamless rather than like tacked-on chat windows. If Xcode gains genuine code generation, it could immediately speed up the workflow for millions of iOS developers.

Across the industry, this is Apple's make-or-break moment in the generative AI race. While Microsoft and Google have pushed hard on cloud-centric copilots, Apple's silicon advantage gives it a chance to show what private, on-device AI can actually do.

We think taking a week off to fix bugs early on was a smart, defensive move. The real question is whether Apple's on-device models can compete without hogging memory, or if the best features will be gated behind upcoming hardware.
