Apple is reportedly building an AI-powered smart display for your wall
Apple is developing a six-inch wall-mounted smart display powered by Siri and Apple Intelligence, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The iPad-like hub acts as a command center for HomeKit devices and video calls, with sensors that adapt UI based on your distance, and could launch as early as March 2025.

If you have a smart home, you probably know the friction: digging through your phone just to dim the living room lights, or shouting at a speaker hoping Siri actually understands what room you are in.
Apple is finally preparing to fix that. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a wall-mounted smart home display powered by Apple Intelligence, which could launch as soon as March 2025.
A six-inch screen built for the living room
The device looks essentially like a compact, square-ish iPad with a six-inch display and noticeably thick bezels. It comes equipped with a built-in camera, rechargeable battery, and internal speakers, and is expected to ship in silver and black.
While the hub will operate independently around the house, Gurman notes that users will still need an iPhone to handle the initial setup.
Apple has reportedly designed several mounting options. You can mount it flush on a wall like Amazon's Echo Hub, or dock it on a tabletop stand that packs extra speakers, similar to Google's Pixel Tablet dock.
The software will not be standard iPadOS. Instead, it runs a brand-new operating system described as a blend between watchOS and iOS StandBy mode.
It also packs proximity sensors that can detect how far away a person is, dynamically altering what is on the screen as you walk closer. Apple's Handoff feature will be built right in, letting you transfer media or tasks back and forth from your iPhone.
Gurman also revealed that Apple is working on a pricier sibling featuring a motorized robotic arm that tilts and swivels the screen toward the user. Meanwhile, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that Apple is also prepping its own smart home camera for production in 2026.
Why it matters
Apple has been lagging behind Amazon and Google in the smart home race for nearly a decade. Despite HomeKit's solid privacy reputation, HomePod alone was never enough to command the household without a visual, shared anchor.
We think the real catalyst here is Apple Intelligence. Traditional smart displays failed to become truly intuitive because voice assistants choked on conversational context. If Apple can pair on-device context with an upgraded, LLM-powered Siri that actually understands ambiguous room commands, this wall tablet could become the smartest interface in your house.
The real challenge will be pricing and openness. Amazon practically gives Echo devices away, and Google already has cheap Nest screens everywhere. If Apple charges premium tablet money for what is essentially a glorified HomeKit controller, it might remain a luxury toy for die-hard ecosystem fans rather than the universal home operating hub Apple wants it to be.
