Apple's conversational Siri hits a wall

Published Reach 44

Apple is reportedly facing major AI rollout delays, with a ChatGPT-like conversational Siri pushed back to iOS 20 at best. Internal data also indicates that real-world Apple Intelligence usage is 'extremely low', leaving iOS 19 with few significant AI upgrades.

If you feel like Apple Intelligence hasn't exactly changed how you use your phone every day, you are not alone. It turns out Apple's own numbers show the exact same thing.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, Apple internal data reveals that real-world usage of Apple Intelligence is currently extremely low. Worse, the company's ambitious roadmap is running into major technical hurdles, pushing the most exciting upgrades down the road.

The conversational Siri backlog

Apple has been working on an entirely overhauled LLM Siri for iOS 19. Today, Siri runs on two split backends: one handle simple chores like timers, while another handles more complex requests. The plan is to merge them into a single, unified brain.

While that architectural revamp is reportedly still tracking for iOS 19, the conversational polish users actually care about is behind schedule. Gurman notes it will no longer debut on stage this June.

In fact, some employees inside Apple's AI team believe a genuinely conversational Siri won't hit consumer pockets until iOS 20 at best. As for the three promised Siri features teased last year for iOS 18, Apple is still aiming to squeeze them into iOS 18.5 this May.

Because engineers are still scrambling to ship features announced almost a year ago, Gurman warns iOS 19 might bring virtually zero significant consumer-facing AI upgrades.

Why it matters

We think this paints a sobering picture of Apple's actual AI readiness versus its keynote marketing.

For everyday iPhone owners, it means you shouldn't buy hardware today banking on near-term AI leaps. The basic writing tools and notification summaries haven't moved the needle, and the dream of an agentic assistant that can truly converse and juggle your personal context appears to be roughly two years away.

For the broader industry, this gives Google and Samsung breathing room to cement their lead in everyday mobile AI. Apple's cautious, privacy-first architecture was supposed to be its trump card, but shipping minor features first made consumers indifferent. By the time Apple delivers in iOS 20, the conversational frontier may have already moved on to full autonomous workflows.
