Amazon puts AI in charge of Prime Video recommendations

Published Reach 31

Amazon is testing a new Prime Video feature called "AI Topics" that replaces traditional recommendation algorithms with AI-generated thematic categories. Instead of generic genres, viewers get tailored suggestions like fantasy quests or character journeys, with options to keep refining results. It is currently rolling out to select living room devices like Fire TV in the US.

Amazon is testing a new Prime Video feature called AI Topics, swapping out traditional recommendation algorithms for AI-generated content clusters.

Viewers in the test group will see hyper-specific categories tailored to their tastes, such as mind-bending sci-fi, fantasy quests, or thrilling character journeys.

Browsing without hitting a wall

Each AI-generated topic pulls together movies, TV shows, and even linear channels.

Instead of trapping you in a static row of titles, the interface lets you click related subtopics to refine your search. Amazon says this setup helps viewers keep exploring without hitting a dead end.

For now, the test is limited to select living room devices in the US, including Fire TV. This follows Prime Video's rollout last month of AI recaps, which generate summaries for entire seasons, single episodes, or specific scenes.

Why it matters

Streaming platforms have used machine learning for years to guess what you might watch next. But by turning algorithms into conversational, clickable themes, Amazon is trying to fix the dreaded infinite scroll that plagues every couch session.

We think this is a clever user-facing tweak, though it also clearly serves Amazon's push to brand itself as an everyday AI frontrunner. The real test is accuracy: if the AI bundles feel generic or miss the tone of what a viewer actually wants, it will quickly feel like just another layer of UI clutter rather than a genuine upgrade.
