Prime Video's new AI catches you up on TV shows without spoilers

Published Reach 35

Amazon just launched X-Ray Recaps on Prime Video, a generative AI tool that creates text summaries of full seasons, episodes, or even specific scenes. It analyzes video and dialogue to highlight key events while enforcing guardrails to prevent spoilers. The beta is live on Fire TV for its original series.

Catching up without spoilers

Amazon Prime Video is rolling out a new generative AI feature called X-Ray Recaps to solve the classic TV dilemma: forgetting what just happened.

The tool generates personalized text recaps for entire seasons, single episodes, or even tiny segments of an episode you paused halfway through. Viewers can pull it up from a show's detail page or directly inside the X-Ray menu during playback.

According to Amazon, the AI looks at video clips alongside subtitles and dialogue to summarize key plot points, characters, times, and places. The company also put guardrails in place to keep summaries concise and avoid accidental spoilers.

The feature is currently in beta, launching first on Fire TV devices before expanding to additional hardware by the end of the year. At launch, it supports all Amazon MGM Studios Original series.

Why it matters

This looks like one of the rare generative AI features in streaming that solves a genuine everyday nuisance rather than chasing hype.

Most viewers abandon series simply because catching up feels like homework, while searching Google or Reddit almost guarantees spoilers. Pinning AI summaries directly to your exact timestamp is a clever fix. For the broader industry, it shows how platforms can add real value to existing catalogs with smart context extraction, though Amazon's anti-spoiler guardrails will definitely be put to the test on complex mystery plots.
