Photoshop gets one-click AI upscaling and lighting match

Adobe just added Generative Upscale to Photoshop, letting users boost image resolution up to eight megapixels with a single click without losing clarity. The update also introduces Harmonize to automatically match lighting across composite elements, alongside an upgraded Remove Tool and a Firefly model picker.

Photoshop has always been an industry heavyweight, but let’s be honest: its learning curve has scared off plenty of casual creators over the years. Now, Adobe is continuing its push to replace multi-step manual tweaks with single-click AI buttons.

Adobe introduced a fresh batch of generative features inside Photoshop, led by a brand-new tool called Generative Upscale alongside major upgrades to layer blending.

One-click upscaling and seamless compositing

Traditional image scaling usually stretches existing pixels, leaving you with blurry edges and heavy artifacts. Generative Upscale takes a different approach by using AI to reconstruct image clarity.

It can boost an image’s resolution up to eight megapixels without losing sharpness. In live demonstrations, Adobe showed a faded, physical black-and-white family photograph getting revived with crisper lines after a single tap. Adobe also noted that deeper detail-enhancement features are on the roadmap.

Next up is Harmonize, designed to fix one of the biggest headaches in photo compositing: mismatched lighting. Available across Photoshop desktop, web, and early access on iOS, Harmonize automatically aligns colors, highlights, shadows, and overall tone across combined layers.

In one demo, a photo of a running child taken under distinct lighting was pasted alongside two other kids on a beach. A single click matched the lighting conditions, making the composite look natural.

Adobe also refreshed the popular Remove Tool with cleaner object erasure and better background filling. Desktop users get a new Projects beta for organizing and bulk-sharing creative assets, while Generative Fill now includes a model picker so users can toggle between different Firefly image engines.

Why it matters

Instead of chasing flashy text-to-image demos that don't easily fit into real production work, Adobe is systematically eliminating Photoshop’s most tedious manual steps. That is a smart move for retention.

For casual users, photographers dealing with low-res archives, and social media marketers, this saves hours previously spent fiddling with adjustment layers and clone stamps. It brings pro-level compositing down to a point-and-click experience.

However, capping output at eight megapixels means Generative Upscale won’t replace dedicated upscalers for large-format commercial print jobs just yet. We think the real test will be whether professional retouchers feel they still have enough granular control when AI handles the shadows and color bleeding automatically.
