YouTube tests AI chat and comment summaries

Published Reach 40

YouTube just began testing new generative AI features for Premium subscribers, introducing an in-video conversational tool that answers questions without pausing playback, alongside an AI summarizer that organizes sprawling comment sections into bite-sized topics. The experiment is initially rolling out to select Android users in the U.S.

YouTube is rolling out two new generative AI experiments to tackle the worst parts of video watching: losing your train of thought when you look something up, and drowning in thousands of comment replies.

The video giant announced that it is testing an in-stream conversational AI tool and a comment section summarizer. Both features are launching via youtube.com/new on an opt-in basis, starting with select YouTube Premium members.

Chatting with video in real time

The conversational tool effectively places an "Ask" button right beneath the video player. Powered by large language models that draw from both YouTube and the open web, it allows you to dive deeper into what you are watching.

The best part is that it does not pause playback. While the video continues to roll, you can ask clarifying questions, request related video recommendations, or even take generated quizzes on educational content to test your understanding.

For now, the conversational feature is tightly restricted: it is only available on Android devices in the U.S. for eligible Premium subscribers, and it will only show up on a select batch of videos.

Taming chaotic comment sections

The second feature uses generative AI to organize massive comment sections into easily digestible topics.

Instead of scrolling endlessly through jokes and spam, viewers can tap into distinct discussion themes. YouTube points out that creators benefit just as much: they can instantly see what their community is talking about without reading thousands of comments, turning viewer chatter into inspiration for upcoming videos.

YouTube also built in moderation guardrails. If a creator dislikes a generated topic, they can remove it by deleting the individual comments under that topic. Additionally, the AI only processes published comments, skipping anything held for review, flagged with blocked words, or posted by blocked accounts. This test is currently limited to a handful of English-language videos with large comment volumes.

Why it matters

We think YouTube's focus here is a refreshing pivot from the industry's obsession with AI generation.

While most platforms focus on generative tools for creators—like synthetic backgrounds or automated dubbing—YouTube is using LLMs to fix consumption and comprehension. Watching a dense two-hour lecture or technical explainer becomes much less intimidating when you have an interactive research assistant sitting right beneath the video player.

It is also a clear retention play for YouTube Premium. As subscription prices rise across streaming services, simple ad-free viewing is no longer enough. Gating interactive AI tools behind Premium gives Google a compelling new hook to keep users paying monthly.

That said, hallucinations remain a genuine risk. If the AI misinterprets a speaker's argument or serves faulty facts during a medical or educational clip, it could easily mislead viewers. YouTube knows this, which is why it is keeping the rollout exceptionally small. For most people, there is no need to rush out and subscribe just for this, but it offers a solid glimpse of how we will consume long-form video down the road.
