YouTube Music lets AI paint your playlist covers

Published Reach 34

YouTube Music just rolled out a generative AI tool to create custom playlist cover art, replacing the old four-album grid. Users can pick categories and prompts to get five tailored image options, though you still can't upload personal photos. It is currently rolling out to English users in the US.

If you have ever spent hours curating the perfect playlist on YouTube Music, you know the pain of staring at its default cover. It was just a lazy grid stitched together from the album art of the first four tracks.

YouTube Music is finally letting you change that, but with a twist. Instead of letting you upload a photo from your camera roll, Google is rolling out an integrated generative AI tool to design custom cover art for you.

Pick a prompt, get five options

To make your own cover, you tap the pencil icon in the bottom right corner of any playlist art. That opens up a guided prompt builder.

Instead of typing raw prompts into an open text box, you pick from categories like animals, food and drink, colors, nature, or travel. From there, you can hit randomize or tweak pre-filled ideas, like requesting a pug in the style of a Medieval Gothic painting.

The tool generates five distinct images at once. Pick the one that fits your vibe, hit save, and your playlist gets a brand new face.

Right now, the rollout is limited to English-language users in the United States, though YouTube says more regions and languages will follow.

Speed dial and short-form feeds

Custom art is not the only thing arriving on the app. YouTube also announced an upcoming speed dial feature heading to the homepage in the coming months, which pins your most frequent rotations so you can jump straight in.

It caps off a busy stretch of updates for the platform. Earlier this year, YouTube Music added custom radio stations, a TikTok-like music discovery tab called Samples, and song comments.

The aggressive feature rollout comes as YouTube races to keep pace with Spotify, which continues to report surging monthly active users.

Why it matters

We think YouTube found a clever workaround to a classic moderation headache, even if it leaves some power users wanting more.

Allowing open camera uploads immediately brings copyright and inappropriate imagery issues that require heavy moderation. By restricting users to a curated prompt builder, YouTube gives people a sense of creative freedom while keeping the output completely safe.

The downside, of course, is that plenty of users simply want to use their own concert photos or personal designs. A Gothic pug is fun, but it is not a direct replacement for an actual photo from your camera roll.

Across the industry, this shows how streaming wars are shifting beyond music catalogs. Spotify has pushed hard into AI DJs and algorithmic personal curation. YouTube Music is responding by turning playlist customization and discovery into mini-interactive experiences to keep listeners hooked inside the app.
