Yelp rolls out AI-powered search highlights and video reviews

Published Reach 33

Yelp just revamped its search experience with AI that deciphers user intent and pulls relevant snippets directly from reviews into search results. The platform also introduced 12-second high-resolution video uploads for reviews and a "Surprise Me" button to quickly dish out nearby recommendations.

If you have ever waded through dozens of rambling Yelp reviews just to find out whether a local park actually has tennis courts, you know how painful local search can be.

Yelp rolled out a major series of updates aimed directly at that friction, leaning on AI to extract key details from customer reviews while bringing short-form video into the fold.

Smarter snippets and a button for the indecisive

The biggest change lands right inside the search results. Yelp is now using AI to parse what you are actually searching for and pull relevant snippets directly out of existing reviews.

Search for "tennis courts," for instance, and Yelp will surface specific lines underneath each venue listing, like "there are tennis courts that you need to book in advance." Instead of opening five tabs and skimming paragraphs of text, the answer sits right on the card.

The search engine also stops assuming you only care about your current GPS coordinates. It can now recommend spots across the U.S. based on search intent, making trip planning far less clunky.

For those moments when you are standing on a corner completely paralyzed by lunch options, Yelp added a "Surprise Me" button. Tap it, and it spits out a unique, highly rated spot nearby. If the vibe looks wrong, tap it again.

Restaurant and nightlife listings also picked up clickable category tags to refine your search, along with a sticky navigation bar to jump straight to menus, amenities, or photos. Even the photo galleries got an overhaul, using AI to categorize food and venue pictures automatically.

12-second clips and a $2,500 safety net

Reviewing is changing, too. Users can now attach high-resolution videos up to 12 seconds alongside their photos and write-ups, whether that is showing off a hiking trail or a hotel room view.

To coax more structured feedback out of reviewers, Yelp added interactive topic pills for food, service, and ambience at the top of draft reviews. As you cover each topic in your text, the tag automatically turns green with a checkmark. Yelp plans to expand these prompts into services, beauty, and shopping later.

Readers also get four new reaction buttons beyond the classic useful, funny, and cool: helpful, thanks, love this, and oh no.

On the services side, Yelp launched "Yelp Guaranteed." If you hire an eligible business through its Request a Quote feature and things go south—property damage, shoddy work, or a contractor ghosting after taking a deposit—Yelp will back you up with claims of up to $2,500.

Finally, Yelp introduced a passwordless login option that lets users sign in with a single click via an email authentication link.

Why it matters

For everyday consumers, this cuts out an enormous amount of review fatigue. Extracting direct answers out of sprawling user write-ups turns messy crowdsourced opinions into something functional. If it saves you three minutes of scrolling before dinner, the feature earns its keep.

From a competitive standpoint, Yelp is fighting on two fronts: Google Maps on utilities and TikTok on discovery. Younger diners increasingly search for food via short clips rather than star ratings. Bringing in 12-second videos and playful features like "Surprise Me" is an obvious bid to keep people inside Yelp rather than bouncing to social feeds.

We think Yelp made the right call by avoiding a trendy, standalone conversational chatbot. Instead, it quietly injected AI where it actually helps: surfacing context snippets, categorizing photo feeds, and nudging reviewers to write better content. The big risk, however, is review accuracy. If a business is plagued by astroturfing, the AI will happily summarize fabricated claims as truth.
