Yelp adds Review Insights and AI perks in year-end update
Yelp just rolled out its end-of-year product release packed with over 20 updates, headlined by AI-powered Review Insights. The feature uses LLMs to score topics like food quality, wait times, and ambiance from 1 to 100 directly above reviews. It gives users a quick snapshot of what people actually think, currently live on iOS for dining and nightlife.

Looking at a 4.5-star Yelp rating never tells the whole story. You could easily walk into incredible pasta only to sit in an ear-splitting room, wait 45 minutes for a table, and get hit with a surprise tip fee at the register.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Yelp just shipped its end-of-year product release packed with more than 20 updates. The main theme is using large language models to tear down that wall of text and give you the real tea on local spots.
Breaking down the stars
The headline feature is Review Insights.
Instead of forcing you to skim dozens of long-winded essays, Yelp is using LLMs to scan customer reviews and analyze sentiment across specific aspects like food quality, service, ambiance, wait times, and drinks.
Even if a reviewer doesn't explicitly use the word "wait," the model reads between the lines. If someone wrote that they froze outside on the sidewalk for half an hour, it flags that sentiment under wait time.
These insights are bundled into sentiment scores ranging from 1 to 100, labeled as positive, neutral, or critical, and placed right above the reviews on business pages. Tap a score, and you jump straight into the reviews discussing that exact topic. It is live now on iOS for restaurants, food, and nightlife, with home and local services coming next year.
On top of that, business pages now display tipping policies upfront, so there are no surprises when the card reader flips around.
Apple Maps quotes and pro broadcasts
Yelp isn't just focusing on food. Service bookings got an AI overhaul too.
Yelp Assistant, the company's AI chatbot that links consumers with home pros, now lets users edit active projects and broadcast job requests to multiple service providers at once.
Yelp also teamed up with Apple. You can now tap "Request a Quote" directly inside Apple Maps to connect with local pros without leaving your navigation flow.
For business owners, Yelp rolled out an AI-powered smart selection tool that automates and optimizes ad performance, paired with an AI-enhanced inbox to help pros manage incoming leads. In total, Yelp introduced over 80 features across 2024.
Why it matters
We think this is one of the most practical applications of generative AI we have seen in consumer tech lately.
Instead of slapping an awkward conversational chatbot across the entire screen and calling it a day, Yelp treated LLMs as a high-speed data refinery. It takes millions of unstructured rants and praises and turns them into digestible, topic-level scorecards.
For consumers, it saves minutes of doom-scrolling through reviews just to figure out if a venue is too loud for a first date. The upfront tipping policy transparency solves a genuine friction point in everyday dining.
For the broader industry, Yelp is playing defense against AI search engines. With tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity making it effortless to ask conversational local questions, legacy directories have to structure their proprietary data, or risk becoming obsolete.
The only real risk here lies in sentiment accuracy. Condensing messy human opinions into a neat 1-to-100 score can backfire if an LLM misinterprets sarcasm or hyperbole, which could quickly trigger fresh disputes between business owners and the platform.
