Yelp launches AI receptionist to take restaurant calls

Yelp just introduced an AI-powered call answering service to help restaurants and local businesses handle reservations, manage waitlists, and block spam calls. The tool can be tailored with custom greetings and routing rules so busy venues never miss a lead. It is currently under development.

Peak dinner rush is the worst time for a host to answer the phone, but ignoring it usually means lost revenue.

Yelp wants to eliminate that headache entirely. As part of its Spring Product Release, the company announced an upcoming AI-powered call answering service designed specifically for restaurants and local service businesses. The explicit goal, according to Yelp, is ensuring that "businesses never have to miss a call again."

Handling dinner tables and repair quotes

Instead of acting like a generic corporate bot, the system is designed to plug directly into Yelp's proprietary platform and merchant data.

For restaurants, the feature integrates with Yelp Guest Manager. The voice agent can take reservations, add callers directly to the waitlist, answer basic operational questions, and even highlight current promotions like happy hour specials.

For service providers, like auto repair shops or home contractors, the AI acts as an intake specialist. A caller describing a sputtering car engine can provide vehicle details, answer diagnostic follow-up questions, and receive potential next steps while their info is routed to the shop for a quick callback.

Businesses can customize greeting scripts, choose specific follow-up question flows, and dictate exact rules for when a call must transfer to human staff. The tool also filters out spam calls automatically.

Why it matters

For small business owners who cannot afford dedicated front-desk staff, phone automation addresses a constant operational leak. Missed calls are missed dollars, especially during peak hours.

However, Yelp notes the tool is still under development, meaning business owners cannot deploy it just yet. Real-world voice reliability—handling thick accents, noisy backgrounds, and frustrated callers—will make or break its actual utility.

From a platform perspective, this is a smart defensive play. Yelp is shifting from a discovery and review directory into mission-critical workflow infrastructure. Once a restaurant relies on Yelp Guest Manager not just for reservations, but for handling inbound phone calls and filtering spam, switching to a competitor becomes exponentially harder.

The real risk lies in error tolerance. A misinterpreted table size on a Saturday night or botched mechanical details can cause instant friction between a business and its customers. Yelp will need bulletproof guardrails and seamless fallback to humans before local shops fully trust it with their phone lines.
