xAI just launched a free Grok add-in for Microsoft Excel, bringing its AI directly into your spreadsheets. Users can ask questions about data in plain English, generate formulas, run scenarios, and auto-insert charts citing exact cells. It also connects to Google Drive and SharePoint, and works across Word and PowerPoint too.

Spreadsheet wrangling might be about to get a lot less painful. xAI just launched Grok for Excel, a free Microsoft 365 add-in that lets users chat with their spreadsheets directly. It is available right now on the Microsoft Marketplace, and xAI noted the integration works across Word and PowerPoint too.

Chatting with rows and columns

Once installed, you can highlight any range and ask Grok in plain English what moved, why it changed, or what stands out. The assistant answers with specific cell citations so you can verify the math, and it can drop generated charts directly next to your data.

Instead of hunting down obscure formulas, you can simply describe what you want, and Grok writes the syntax directly into the formula bar. It handles forecasting reruns, downside scenarios, and month-end closes without manual rebuilding. Interestingly, it also hooks into external connectors, letting you pull context from recent emails, SharePoint, or Google Drive files into your active workbook.

Why it matters

For everyday users and financial modelers, this is an immediate productivity boost. Having cell-level citations fixes one of the biggest risks of using AI on spreadsheets: hallucinated numbers that break a financial model. The fact that it is free makes it an absolute no-brainer to test out for anyone dreading their next month-end close.

On an industry level, xAI is playing offense right in Microsoft’s backyard. Microsoft has been charging hefty enterprise premiums for Copilot inside Office apps. By offering Grok for free inside Excel—and even pulling context from rival platforms like Google Drive—xAI is mounting a direct challenge to Microsoft’s workplace AI monetization.

We think this is a smart distribution play for Elon Musk’s AI firm. Getting into enterprise workflows through established tools is much faster than convincing everyone to adopt a new standalone app. That said, whether security-conscious corporate IT departments will allow a third-party AI to dig through confidential financial workbooks remains the big question mark.
