xAI poaches Cursor leads to fix Grok's coding

Published Reach 48

xAI just hired Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, two senior product engineering leads from hot coding startup Cursor, reporting directly to Elon Musk. Musk admitted that Grok is currently lagging behind rivals in coding and said the startup is undergoing an all-hands rebuild to leapfrog the competition. Why it matters: Cursor built the gold standard for developer workflows, and xAI wants that applied product magic inside its models.

Elon Musk is tired of Grok being bad at coding, so he went straight to the startup that proved everyone else wrong about AI development.

XAI poached Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, two senior product engineers who previously co-led product engineering at Cursor. In their new roles, both engineers will report directly to Musk across both xAI and SpaceX.

Tearing down the foundation

Musk made no effort to sugarcoat why the hires were made.

Musk publicly admitted that Grok is currently behind in coding and announced that xAI is in the middle of an all-hands on coding sprint to overhaul its capabilities and leapfrog competitors.

He also stated that xAI was not built right the first time around, confirming the entire setup is essentially being rebuilt from the ground up. Online onlookers quickly dubbed the hiring a fractional acquisition of Cursor.

Cursor has rapidly become a developer darling, built around deep codebase understanding and relentless shipping velocity for hundreds of thousands of engineers.

Moving from lab research to shipping tools

The raid on Cursor comes during a chaotic yet cash-rich phase for xAI.

The startup recently suffered a string of high-profile co-founder departures. However, xAI also just closed a massive $20 billion Series E funding round, giving Musk virtually limitless capital to snap up top-tier talent.

Bringing in product-focused leaders signals a stark tactical shift for xAI. Instead of only hoarding theoretical research scientists, the company is prioritizing applied AI infrastructure and developer workflows.

Why it matters

Coding is the single most valuable, monetizable wedge for frontier AI models today, and whoever captures developers wins the broader ecosystem.

For developers, there is no need to switch your daily workflow to Grok just yet. Rebuilding an AI foundation from scratch takes months, not days, so you can safely stick with Claude or Cursor while Musk's new team gets to work.

For the AI industry, this raises the competitive stakes significantly. OpenAI and Anthropic have dominated the coding benchmark leaderboards, but xAI is weaponizing its $20 billion war chest to tackle engineering experience rather than just raw model compute.

We think poaching product leaders from Cursor is one of the smartest tactical moves xAI has made in months. Most frontier labs mistakenly assume a higher benchmark score automatically wins developer loyalty, but Cursor proved that workflow integration and editor ergonomics matter just as much.

The clear risk, however, lies in execution. With recent co-founder churn and reports directly to Musk across both xAI and SpaceX, the sheer pressure on these two leaders to single-handedly rescue Grok's coding stack will be intense.
