SpaceX buys Cursor to boost Grok's coding muscle
SpaceX just officially closed its acquisition of Cursor AI, bringing the popular AI coding editor into its fold. The Cursor team is joining the SpaceX AI division to continue building Cursor while strengthening the broader Grok ecosystem, including Grok Build, Grok Bot, and the Grok API.

A coding editor joining a rocket maker might sound wild, but it is now officially a done deal.
Cursor announced that SpaceX has officially closed its acquisition of the AI coding platform. The Cursor team is moving over to SpaceX's dedicated AI division, SpaceXAI.
A $60 billion pipeline to the world's biggest GPU fleet
The deal caps off a whirlwind few months. The two companies originally signed a joint development pact in April, which handed SpaceX an option to acquire Cursor for $60 billion. After SpaceX went public two months later, both sides pushed the deal over the finish line.
The Cursor team will continue building its signature editor while helping ship Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot, and the Grok API. In its announcement, Cursor pointed straight to SpaceX's computing power, noting it will now tap into the largest fleet of GPUs in the world.
SpaceX previously acquired xAI earlier this year, building out an infrastructure footprint so large it has rented capacity to rivals like Anthropic and Google. Still, that footprint comes with baggage, as SpaceX is currently fighting a lawsuit over pollution tied to its data center gas turbines.
Why it matters
This puts Elon Musk's AI stack right into the daily workflows of millions of engineers.
For developers, Cursor gains near-infinite compute, which should translate into faster inference and deeper code context. The flip side is neutrality: Cursor will almost certainly prioritize Grok-native features and workflows going forward.
We think this is SpaceX's sharpest software move yet. Grok has had massive compute clusters and plenty of hype, but lacked an indispensable daily tool. Buying Cursor gives the Grok platform an immediate, fiercely loyal developer beachhead.
