Grok is finally ready to leave the nest of X.

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone consumer app, according to The Wall Street Journal. The upcoming app will resemble OpenAI’s ChatGPT, giving users direct access to the Grok chatbot from their personal devices without having to open X.

A $50B valuation and $11B in the war chest

According to the Financial Times, the standalone app will likely arrive right after xAI closes its next funding round.

That round could reach $5 billion at a $50 billion valuation, doubling the startup's valuation from just six months ago. Once closed, xAI will have raised roughly $11 billion in total.

The FT also reports that Musk offered up to 25% of xAI shares to investors who backed his $44 billion Twitter acquisition. Heavyweight backers like Fidelity, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey could effectively be made whole on their Twitter bets thanks to xAI’s rapid paper gains.

Why it matters

For everyday users, a standalone Grok app lowers the barrier to entry. Until now, using Grok meant dealing with the baggage of an X account. Soon, people can treat Grok as a direct daily driver alongside ChatGPT and Claude.

We think this is the right and necessary move for xAI. Keeping Grok trapped inside X was limiting its potential to become a true mass-market utility. By rolling out a standalone mobile client backed by fresh billions in funding, Musk is officially taking the gloves off and challenging OpenAI directly on the home screen.
