WordPress.com turns prompts into full websites

Published Reach 38

WordPress.com just launched a free AI website builder that designs ready-to-publish sites from a simple text prompt, automatically generating layouts, copy, and images. Users can tweak pages manually or ask the chatbot for revisions. It does not handle e-commerce or complex integrations yet, but for blogs and portfolios, building a site now takes minutes.

Building a WordPress site used to mean wrestling with themes, CSS quirks, layout blocks, and placeholder images before you could even publish a single word.

WordPress.com officially launched its new AI website builder, designed to turn a simple text prompt into a fully realized website in minutes.

Prompt to publish

Instead of starting with a blank canvas or picking through hundreds of generic themes, the builder sets up your site through conversation.

Users log in, type out what they need, and the AI generates a complete layout populated with text, page structures, and imagery.

Editing follows a hybrid approach. If something looks off, you can type follow-up instructions into the chat box or jump directly into the standard block editor to tweak colors, swap images, and rewrite copy manually.

WordPress.com recommends being as detailed as possible in the initial prompt, including the site name, category, and target content. Once you are satisfied with the preview, clicking the Launch button pushes the site live immediately.

Portfolios yes, storefronts not yet

Automattic is aiming this feature at solo founders, freelancers, bloggers, and creators who need a professional landing page or portfolio without hiring a developer.

It is also positioned for web developers who want to spin up quick prototypes for clients instead of scaffolding projects from scratch.

However, there are clear limitations out of the gate. WordPress.com confirmed that the AI builder cannot yet handle ecommerce functionality or sites requiring complex third-party integrations.

Underneath the hood, it is still a standard WordPress installation, meaning users on Business plans and above can still tap into full developer tools whenever they outgrow the automated design.

Why it matters

For non-technical creators and small business owners, this takes away the biggest friction point in owning an independent website. Instead of getting stuck in theme customization menus or giving up for social platforms, you can get a functional personal site running in one sitting.

For WordPress.com, this is a necessary countermove. Platforms like Framer, Squarespace, and standalone AI builders have been chipping away at WordPress's core advantage by making page generation almost effortless.

We think WordPress.com made the right choice by treating AI as an on-ramp rather than a replacement for its underlying engine. You get the quick conversational bootstrap, but you still retain standard WordPress content ownership and manual controls.

The real test will be how quickly they can solve ecommerce. Without store support, this remains primarily a tool for static portfolios and blogs, leaving high-value commercial users on the sidelines for now.
