Tencent drops Hunyuan3D 2.0 for high-res 3D assets

Published Reach 48

Tencent just open-sourced Hunyuan3D 2.0, a two-stage foundation system for generating detailed, textured 3D meshes from single images. By decoupling geometry creation via a DiT shape generator from texture baking with a dedicated diffusion model, it can also texture handcrafted meshes, beating previous open and closed-source baselines.

Hunyuan3D 2.0 is an open-source 3D asset synthesis system from Tencent that turns a single 2D image into a production-ready, textured 3D mesh.

What it does

Most existing image-to-3D models try to predict shape and color all at once, which usually leaves you with lumpy geometry and blurry textures.

Tencent tackled this by splitting the pipeline into two dedicated steps. First, Hunyuan3D-DiT uses a flow-based diffusion transformer to build a clean, accurate untextured mesh aligned with the input image.

Next, a separate texture model called Hunyuan3D-Paint takes that bare mesh and bakes on high-resolution, vibrant texture maps.

Decoupling the two tasks unlocks a very handy workflow: you do not have to generate the mesh from scratch. You can simply feed your own handcrafted, untextured 3D models into the pipeline and let Hunyuan3D-Paint handle the texturing. Tencent also introduced Hunyuan3D-Studio, a companion tool for manipulating and animating the finished assets.

Performance and setup

In benchmarks, Hunyuan3D 2.0 beat both open-source and closed-source baselines on metrics like CMMD (3.193), FID, and CLIP scores, showing sharper geometry and closer alignment to the prompt image.

The weights and inference code are up on Hugging Face and GitHub. The release includes the DiT shape model, the Paint texture model, and a Delight module to strip out baked-in lighting.

You can call it via a diffusers-style Python API and export meshes directly to glb or obj. If you prefer a visual interface, there is a local Gradio app ready to launch.

Keep in mind that setup requires compiling custom rasterizers and differentiable rendering tools locally, so you will need a capable GPU and proper build tools. ComfyUI nodes and TensorRT optimizations are on the roadmap.

Why it matters

For indie game devs, digital creators, and 3D hobbyists, Hunyuan3D 2.0 offers one of the sharpest local 3D pipelines available right now. The standout feature is texturing custom meshes, which fits neatly into existing modeling pipelines and skips hours of tedious UV unwrapping and manual painting.

Tencent's modular approach feels spot-on. Instead of treating 3D generation as an inflexible black box, giving creators standalone tools for geometry and texture is what actually bridges the gap between AI demos and real game engines.
