Spotify expands AI Playlist tool to the US and Canada
Spotify just expanded its generative AI Playlist beta to Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, and beyond. Users can type in natural language prompts to spin up a custom 30-song playlist and tweak the vibe with follow-up instructions. Why it matters: Music curation is shifting from fixed genre tags to conversational, mood-based requests.

Tired of spending twenty minutes hunting for the right driving tracks only to end up playing your Daily Mix again? Spotify wants to fix that with a single prompt.
The streaming giant just rolled out its generative AI Playlist feature in beta to Premium subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and other markets, expanding beyond its initial April test run in the UK and Australia.
Turn vibes into 30-track mixtapes
The feature sits right inside the mobile app on iOS and Android. Head to Your Library, tap the plus sign at the top corner, and you'll find a new AI Playlist option.
From there, you can pick from suggested ideas or type whatever prompt pops into your head. Spotify gave examples like "upbeat pop music for my European summer vacation" or "a romantic playlist for date night at home." The tool spins up a personalized 30-track playlist matching that vibe, and you can keep refining the results by typing additional tweaks before saving or sharing.
There is a paywall, though. The feature remains in beta and requires a Spotify Premium subscription, which currently runs $12 a month for individuals, $17 for Duo, and $20 for Family plans in the US.
Why it matters
Searching for music using rigid genre tags and keywords has always felt clunky when what you actually want is a specific mood. For listeners, typing plain English like "rainy afternoon coffee shop jazz" and getting a custom set instantly removes the chore of manual playlist curation. If you are already paying for Premium, it is definitely worth playing with.
For Spotify, putting generative AI behind the Premium wall is a textbook retention move. As music streaming becomes increasingly commoditized, platforms cannot just compete on catalog size anymore. Turning everyday moods into instant playlists is a clever, high-utility application of AI that gives casual listeners a genuine reason to keep paying their monthly subscription.
