Spotify turns text prompts into custom playlists
Spotify just launched AI Playlist in beta, letting Premium subscribers turn random ideas and text prompts into personalized music mixes. You can ask for specific moods, activities, or quirky vibes, and refine the tracks directly in chat. It’s currently testing on iOS and Android for users in the UK and Australia.

Ever had a hyper-specific mood that no search bar could quite capture? Think along the lines of sad music for painting dying flowers, or indie folk to give your brain a big warm hug. Spotify thinks generative AI is the answer to that exact craving.
Spotify just rolled out AI Playlist in beta, a new feature that lets Premium subscribers turn plain text descriptions into custom curated playlists. For now, the roll out is available on Android and iOS devices for paying users located in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Prompt engineering your next mixtape
Using the tool feels like chatting with a bot that happens to know Spotify's entire catalog. Inside Your Library, tapping the plus icon in the top corner brings up the new AI Playlist option alongside the usual playlist creator.
From there, listeners can pick from suggested prompts or type their own weird ideas. Spotify says the system understands references to places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis. According to the company, the best results usually come from combining genres, moods, artists, or decades.
What makes it genuinely useful is the conversational refinement. Once Spotify generates a list, you don't have to start over if the vibe is slightly off. You can preview songs, delete individual tracks, or type follow-up instructions like more pop or less upbeat until it hits the mark. Non-music prompts like current events or specific brands are actively blocked, alongside offensive queries.
Why it matters
Music streaming services all have roughly the same 100 million tracks. The real battleground is curation, and Spotify has been running laps around the competition here.
Between its existing AI DJ and dynamic daylist, Spotify claims nearly two billion music discoveries happen on its platform every day. But while those tools rely on Spotify guessing what you want based on listening history, AI Playlist flips the script by letting listeners steer with pure natural language. If you are someone who hates spending an hour manually building a niche playlist, this cuts the chore down to thirty seconds.
We think this is a smart strategic move that puts immediate pressure on Apple Music and Amazon Music, neither of which offers an equivalent conversational curation tool yet. That said, Spotify's heavy guardrails against brands and current events might neuter some of the most creative pop-culture use cases. Still, as a way to unlock deep catalog listening from fuzzy vibes, it looks like one of the most practical consumer applications of generative AI we have seen in streaming.
