SoftBank completes massive $40B OpenAI funding

Published Reach 43

SoftBank just sent over a final $22B tranche to OpenAI, fully wrapping up its $40B investment commitment and securing an 11% stake in the AI startup. The funds will directly bankroll OpenAI's massive compute buildout, including the Stargate data center venture with Oracle. Why it matters: SoftBank is going all-in on Sam Altman's vision as OpenAI scales toward an IPO.

Masayoshi Son didn't feel like waiting two years.

SoftBank has officially completed its massive $40 billion investment commitment in OpenAI, according to CNBC. The Japanese tech conglomerate wired the final chunk of $22 billion to $22.5 billion just last week, wrapping up a funding schedule originally expected to stretch out over 12 to 24 months.

Between SoftBank's own earlier checks of $7.5 billion and another $11 billion syndicated from co-investors, the total aggregate commitment landed at $41 billion. That gives SoftBank an estimated 11% stake in the ChatGPT maker, following a deal struck earlier this year at a $260 billion pre-money valuation.

Selling picks to buy the gold mine

To free up this kind of cash, SoftBank had to make some dramatic moves.

Just last month, SoftBank liquidated its entire $5.8 billion position in Nvidia. Sources confirmed at the time that the windfall from dumping the chip giant was meant specifically to fund this OpenAI commitment.

SoftBank followed that up this Monday by agreeing to acquire digital infrastructure investment firm DigitalBridge for $4 billion. Meanwhile, a portion of the OpenAI cash is earmarked for Stargate, the joint AI supercomputing infrastructure venture between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank.

OpenAI certainly needs every dollar. The company has lined up over $1.4 trillion in infrastructure commitments over the next few years with Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom. And it is not hurting for suitors: Microsoft has injected billions over the years, Disney just put in $1 billion to bring Mickey Mouse and other licensed characters into Sora, and Amazon is reportedly exploring an investment topping $10 billion, all while OpenAI eyes an eventual IPO.

Why it matters

SoftBank putting its cash down early is a loud signal that the frontier AI cash burn shows no signs of slowing down.

For everyday users and developers, this liquidity ensures OpenAI won't be throttling compute or slowing down model deployments anytime soon. Building and serving next-gen reasoning models and video generation like Sora demands astronomical compute budgets. With forty billion fresh dollars in the bank, OpenAI can afford to keep subsidizing heavy usage and pushing raw scale.

For the broader industry, it sets the table for an unforgiving capital moat. When a single foundation model maker commands backing from Microsoft, Amazon, Disney, and SoftBank simultaneously, the cost of entry is essentially closed off to anyone without sovereign or trillion-dollar tech backing. Anthropic, Google, and Meta have no choice but to match these eye-watering capital outlays.

We think Son's maneuver is vintage SoftBank: wildly aggressive and high-stakes. Dumping proven cash machine Nvidia to go all-in on OpenAI is a calculated pivot away from the picks and shovels toward the miners themselves. If OpenAI successfully goes public and monetizes its ecosystem, an 11% stake is historic. But if enterprise AI monetization takes longer than expected to offset $1.4 trillion in infrastructure obligations, carrying this much concentrated risk could make it one of the most perilous bets in venture history.
