OpenAI and SoftBank launch $500B Stargate venture

Published Reach 60

OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX just launched The Stargate Project, an ambitious venture planning to pour $500 billion into U.S. AI infrastructure over the next four years. With $100 billion deployed immediately starting in Texas, SoftBank handles the money while OpenAI runs operations alongside tech partners like NVIDIA and Microsoft.

Just when you thought the AI infrastructure race couldn't get any wilder, OpenAI and a coalition of global tech giants dropped a literal half-trillion-dollar bombshell.

OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and UAE-based investment firm MGX just announced the launch of a new company called "The Stargate Project." The ambitious venture plans to deploy a staggering $500B over the next four years to build out massive AI infrastructure across the United States solely for OpenAI, with $100B deploying immediately.

Construction is already underway starting in Texas, with plans to expand across multiple nationwide campuses as land and power deals close.

Masayoshi Son takes the helm of an all-star alliance

The organizational breakdown of Stargate is straightforward: SoftBank handles the financial muscle, OpenAI manages operations, and SoftBank chief Masayoshi Son will serve as chairman.

On the hardware and computing side, the venture unites a powerhouse tech coalition including Nvidia, Microsoft, Arm, Oracle, and OpenAI. The core computing cluster will be built and operated in tight coordination between Oracle, Nvidia, and OpenAI, extending a partnership with Nvidia that traces back to 2016.

Microsoft isn't getting sidelined either. OpenAI confirmed it will continue to scale up its massive consumption of Microsoft Azure alongside this new dedicated compute.

By late January, the project had already issued formal Requests for Proposals (RFPs) targeting power and land acquisitions, as well as qualifications for architecture and site engineering firms.

Speed over guardrails in Washington

The timing of Stargate is just as massive as its balance sheet.

The venture went public right alongside President Donald Trump's repeal of the Biden administration's landmark AI executive order. That order previously mandated safety testing disclosures for top-tier models and established the U.S. AI Safety Institute.

With regulatory hurdles slashed and half a trillion dollars lined up, OpenAI is aligning heavily with Washington's industrial push, explicitly pitching Stargate as a driver for hundreds of thousands of domestic jobs and American geopolitical leadership.

Why it matters

Stargate officially turns frontier AI from a software sprint into a brute-force heavy infrastructure war.

For everyday developers and businesses, this isn't going to make token pricing plunge tomorrow. Instead, it widens the moat around frontier intelligence. When building next-generation models requires private utility grids and capital outlays rivaling national budgets, training flagship frontier systems moves completely out of reach for anyone outside a tiny cartel.

We think OpenAI's maneuvering here is remarkably savvy. By pairing SoftBank's capital hunger with Oracle's data center flexibility and Nvidia's hardware pipeline, Sam Altman secures an unprecedented compute war chest while keeping Microsoft close. It forces rivals like Google and Anthropic to either match these mind-boggling balance sheets or risk falling an entire generation behind.

The obvious catch lies in real-world friction. Generating the gigawatts of power, securing cooling resources, and actually deploying $500B over four years is an immense logistical gamble. And with safety regulations actively peeled back, the industry appears to be choosing raw velocity over caution at the exact moment computing scale reaches an industrial extreme.
