Runway Gen-2 opens to everyone with 90 seconds free
Runway just opened its Gen-2 video generator to everyone, ditching the waitlist and the cumbersome Discord workflow. Users also get 90 seconds of free video generation before needing to upgrade. Basically, creating videos from text and images is now accessible directly on the web for anyone.
Getting early access to AI video generation used to feel like an obstacle course: you had to sit on a waitlist and wrestle with prompts inside a chaotic Discord channel.
That era is wrapping up. Runway has officially opened its Gen-2 text-to-video model to the public, dropping the waitlist entirely and ditching the Discord requirement.
No waitlist, no Discord, plus 90 free seconds
According to tech creator mreflow, anyone can now jump in and create videos without waiting for an invite or navigating Runway's Discord server.
Runway is also handing out 90 seconds of free video creation before you have to think about upgrading to a paid plan. Given that typical clips only run a few seconds, that is plenty of room to test your prompts and see how the model behaves.
Why it matters
We think moving away from Discord into a direct interface is a crucial step for creative AI. Discord worked well for early technical testing, but the endless chat feed was a major turnoff for video editors and creators who just wanted a clean workspace.
Offering 90 seconds of free compute is also an aggressive move. Generating video is notoriously expensive, so handing out free time suggests Runway feels confident about its infrastructure scaling up. If you build storyboards or short-form content, this is the easiest moment yet to test generative video without spending a dime.
