Reddit teams up with Google to launch AI search tool
Reddit just rolled out Reddit Answers, an AI search tool powered by Google's Gemini models on Vertex AI. Instead of digging through endless comment threads, users can ask questions directly and get synthesized summaries with sourced posts, relevant subreddits, and follow-up chat support.

If you are like most of the internet, your everyday Google searches probably end with site:reddit.com just to bypass the sea of SEO garbage. Now, Reddit is cutting out the middleman.
Reddit has partnered with Google Cloud to launch Reddit Answers, a new AI-powered search assistant designed to dig through the platform's endless archives and serve up instant solutions.
Gemini digs through 400M weekly users
The tool runs on Google's Gemini models via Vertex AI. Instead of forcing you to comb through dozens of dusty threads, Reddit Answers summarizes relevant posts and comments to give you a coherent takeaway.
It does not just stop at text answers. The tool also surfaces the specific comments, the original threads, and the entire subreddits where the discussion originated, giving you the broader context around the topic.
You can also treat it like a conversational chatbot, asking follow-up questions to drill down into niche recommendations or technical troubleshooting.
Reddit first teased AI-powered search back in August, noting it would mix first-party engineering with third-party tools. This rollout marks the biggest milestone yet in that promise.
The ghost of glue pizza
Putting an AI directly in charge of reading Reddit is undeniably ironic. About a year ago, Google AI Overviews went viral for telling users to put non-toxic glue on pizza and cook spaghetti with gasoline. Virtually all of that bad advice was scraped from old, sarcastic Reddit jokes.
Whether Gemini has actually learned to recognize Reddit's trademark sarcasm remains the real test.
So far, leadership seems thrilled. Matt Snelham, SVP of Infrastructure at Reddit, noted that initial results show improved search relevance and an uptick in users navigating directly to the homepage via Reddit Answers.
Why it matters
For everyday users, this could finally fix one of the most frustrating parts of the internet: Reddit's notoriously terrible native search. If you can query real human opinions without opening fifty tabs and dodging spammy affiliate sites, that is an immediate win.
For the tech landscape, this partnership cements a massive symbiotic relationship. Google locks down exclusive access to the internet's most valuable human conversation repository, while Reddit gets access to world-class cloud infrastructure to make its own product usable.
That said, we think the real challenge will be nuance. Reddit's best content is often buried inside sarcastic banter, disagreements, and hyper-specific cultural context. If Gemini flattens that nuance into bland corporate summaries—or worse, falls for trolls again—users will quickly revert to reading raw threads manually.
