Reddit turns its forum goldmine into AI search summaries

Published Reach 31

Reddit just announced plans to test AI-powered search pages later this year, placing summaries and community recommendations right at the top of results. The feature combines in-house tech with third-party models. After licensing its data to OpenAI and Google, Reddit is finally putting AI to work on its own product.

For years, the smartest search hack on the web has been tacking "reddit" onto the end of every Google query just to find real humans talking about real things.

Now, Reddit wants to cut out the middleman entirely.

During Reddit’s Q2 earnings call on Tuesday, co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman revealed that the platform will begin testing AI-powered search result pages later this year to summarize conversations and recommend relevant communities.

Summaries at the top of the feed

Huffman told investors that the feature will help users "dive deeper" into content and discover new subreddits without endless scrolling.

Behind the curtain, Reddit will use a blend of its own internal tech and third-party models. That should surprise nobody who tracked their May partnership with OpenAI, where OpenAI secured Reddit data for training in exchange for giving Reddit access to its flagship models. Reddit inked a similar data licensing pact with Google earlier this year.

AI dominated much of the conversation on the call. Huffman also praised Reddit’s AI-driven language translation feature, crediting it with making France one of its fastest-growing markets, with German, Spanish, and Portuguese rollouts on deck.

All this AI momentum landed on a stellar earnings report. In its second quarter as a public company, Reddit posted 342.3 million weekly active users—a 57% surge year-over-year—and brought in $281.2 million in revenue, clearing Wall Street’s $253.8 million target with room to spare.

Why it matters

We think this is one of Reddit’s sharpest product moves yet, though it carries real risks.

For everyday users, Reddit’s legacy search has been notoriously painful for over a decade. An AI layer that actually digests 500-comment mega-threads into coherent product recommendations or troubleshooting steps makes the site instantly more usable for casual visitors.

For the industry, it is a crucial defensive play. Google and OpenAI have been scraping Reddit to power their own AI overviews, answering queries before users ever click through. By bringing conversational summaries inside its own walls, Reddit is reclaiming its traffic and proving that its content moat works best when kept in-house.

The danger, however, is alienating its core culture. Reddit works because people upvote nuance, debate edge cases, and call out nonsense. If an AI summary sits at the top and siphons off all the clicks, community contributors might wonder why they bother writing detailed breakdowns in the first place.
