Polycam cleans up gaussian splatting with floater-free tool

Published Reach 39

Polycam just released an algorithmic update for its gaussian splatting tool that automatically eliminates messy "floaters" in 3D scenes. The update lets users generate splats directly from an iPhone app or video uploads, improves background reconstruction, and makes all outputs free for commercial use. It makes capturing clean 3D environments as simple as shooting a quick video on your phone.

Anyone who has experimented with 3D Gaussian splatting knows the biggest annoyance: strange, blurry artifacts floating in mid-air and around object edges, commonly called floaters. Usually, cleaning them out requires tedious manual work.

Floater-free capture right from your phone

Polycam rolled out a major algorithmic update aimed directly at fixing that mess. The platform now automatically eliminates those common floating artifacts while visibly improving background reconstructions.

Alongside the cleaner outputs, Polycam is pushing the workflow to everyday devices. Users can now generate splats directly inside the iPhone app or create them by uploading a regular video clip. For heavy workflows, Pro users can upload batches of up to 1,000 images, and Polycam confirmed that all splats are now completely free for commercial use.

Why it matters

Gaussian splatting has been one of the hottest graphics breakthroughs over the past year, but heavy reliance on manual cleanup and local GPU rigs kept it mostly confined to tech demos and research papers. Bringing automated cleanup together with a simple iPhone capture pipeline puts frontier 3D reconstruction right into the hands of indie game developers, digital artists, and e-commerce creators.

Removing the commercial-use paywall is the real kicker here. We think this move sets a high baseline for mobile 3D capture platforms, effectively turning what used to be experimental assets into production-ready pipelines for spatial computing and interactive web experiences.
