Pinterest brings generative AI lifestyle backgrounds to ads

Pinterest just launched generative AI features inside its Performance+ ad suite, letting advertisers turn plain white product shots into lifestyle imagery. In early tests with Walgreens, the AI backgrounds delivered a 55% jump in clickthrough rates while cutting campaign setup inputs in half.

Anyone who sells products online knows the pain of lifestyle photography. Clean white-background shots are cheap and easy to shoot, but drop one into Pinterest and it screams boring banner ad. Users simply scroll right past it.

On Tuesday at its annual Pinterest Presents event, Pinterest finally rolled out generative AI image tools for advertisers as part of its Pinterest Performance+ suite. The main draw is simple: it lets brands take flat, white, or blank product backgrounds and turn them into full lifestyle scenes with simple prompts.

Turning catalog shots into lifestyle pins

AI background generation isn't groundbreaking anymore. Amazon gave its advertisers a very similar tool nearly a year ago, and Google rolled out scene-swapping features around the same time.

Now, advertisers on Pinterest finally get the same capability. Drugstore giant Walgreens was an early test partner, running generative AI across 50 products in different categories. By blending products into natural, Pinterest-friendly scenes instead of showing them in isolation, Walgreens saw click-through rates jump by 55% while cost-per-click dropped 13%.

Beyond image generation, Pinterest says its combined AI and automation features cut campaign setup inputs by half. In early tests, advertisers reportedly experienced a 64% drop in cost per action, a 30% boost in conversion rates, and a 1.8x return on ad spend.

Deals modules and value-based bidding

The company also introduced Promotions, a new set of tools designed to display sales and discounts directly to pinners. These will be available upon advertiser request across nine markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan.

On top of that, Performance+ campaigns now support bidding for highest value, rather than strictly optimizing for raw clicks or conversion volume. The entire suite is now open to global advertisers across consideration, conversion, and catalog sales objectives.

Why it matters

Generative AI background replacement has officially graduated from a flashy novelty into a baseline expectation for digital ad platforms. If you run ads online today, you basically expect the platform to do the heavy creative lifting for you.

For DTC brands and small merchants, this is an immediate win that is worth testing right now. Staging high-end lifestyle photoshoots costs thousands of dollars that smaller teams simply don't have. Turning cold e-commerce cutouts into aesthetic Pinterest pins with zero production budget removes a massive barrier to entry.

Pinterest was relatively late to this party compared to Amazon and Google, but the tool actually makes far more sense here. People browse Amazon with a shopping list, where a white background is perfectly fine. People browse Pinterest for inspiration and moodboards, where a sterile product cutout looks like visual pollution.

The real risk down the road is feed fatigue. When every retailer starts generating the exact same cozy kitchen counter or sunlit living room background with a click of a button, Pinterest feeds could easily get saturated with generic AI plastic. How Pinterest protects its taste-driven identity will be the real test.
