Pinterest's new AI turns hair pins into salon battle plans
Pinterest just launched Beauty Guides, an AI tool that translates saved hair and nail Pins into ready-to-use salon action plans. It decodes visual inspiration into exact stylist terminology like "balayage" or "root melt," complete with estimated salon times, price ranges, and maintenance advice.

Anyone who has ever taken a screenshot to a hair salon knows the dread of hearing a stylist say, "I can try, but that's not actually what you think it is."
On Tuesday, Pinterest introduced a new generative AI feature called Beauty Guides, aimed directly at ending that salon miscommunication.
Powered by Pinterest Intelligence, the company's visual and generative AI system, the tool converts hair and nail Pins into step-by-step salon game plans.
Translating moodboards into stylist lingo
Users already bring reference photos to their appointments, but knowing how to articulate what makes that look work is another story.
When browsing hair or nail inspiration inside the app, users can now tap a "Get the Guide" button. The AI then breaks down the visual details into actual industry terminology that technicians recognize, such as balayage, root melt, or almond nails.
At launch, Beauty Guides covers hairstyles, hair colors, nail shapes, and nail finishes, giving users exact phrases to tell their stylist.
Upfront costs and upkeep reality checks
Beyond lingo, the guide tackles the awkward surprises that usually happen after you sit in the chair.
The feature estimates how long the service will actually take and provides a realistic price range. For multi-step dye jobs like balayage, which routinely run into hundreds of dollars and take several hours, having that reality check beforehand is huge.
It also details post-salon maintenance, such as how often you will need to book a toner refresh, trim, or touch-up to keep the look alive.
Why it matters
We think this is one of the smartest product integrations of generative AI we have seen this year. Instead of building another parlor-trick filter or virtual try-on tool that looks cartoonish, Pinterest simply paved the cow path. People already screenshot Pins to show their stylists; now Pinterest is arming them with the vocabulary to get what they actually want.
For users, it removes the embarrassment of miscommunication and helps dodge surprise salon bills. It is definitely worth trying if you already use Pinterest to plan your seasonal hair or nail appointments.
For Pinterest, this nudges the platform closer to real-world commerce. Pinterest has always been great for daydreaming, but notoriously difficult to close the loop on actual execution. By mapping inspiration directly to time, cost, and maintenance requirements, it becomes an indispensable utility rather than just a visual bookmarking site.
The only real risk here lies in the pricing and timing estimates. Salon rates vary wildly by city and stylist seniority, so if Pinterest's estimates are too rigid, it might create friction between clients and stylists. Still, bridging the gap between "vibes" and professional jargon is a massive quality-of-life upgrade.
