Perplexity brings OpenAI's new GPT-5.1 to paid users
Perplexity just added OpenAI's brand-new GPT-5.1 to its search engine for Pro and Max subscribers. Paid users get immediate access to both GPT-5.1 Instant for rapid daily chats and GPT-5.1 Thinking for heavy reasoning. Perplexity's CEO also teased that Moonshot AI's Kimi K2 is coming soon.

Hours after OpenAI took the wraps off GPT-5.1, Perplexity moved at lightning speed to plug the new models directly into its search engine.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed the rollout on X, pushing OpenAI's latest flagship to paid subscribers almost immediately after it went public.
The feature is currently locked behind a paywall. It is available only to Perplexity Pro subscribers paying $20 a month and Max users paying $40 a month. Free tier users might get a taste down the road, but for now, it is strictly premium.
Two distinct flavors for search
Perplexity is serving GPT-5.1 in two different flavors, depending on what kind of task you are tackling.
GPT-5.1 Instant is tailored for daily queries. It is noticeably warmer, talks more naturally, and strictly follows instructions. If you need quick facts or brainstorming ideas without lag, this is the default pick.
GPT-5.1 Thinking takes the heavy-lifting route. Built for complex reasoning, it delivers clearer logic with fewer vague words and features adaptive thinking time when facing difficult puzzles.
Both variants cut down on confusing technical jargon. Users can also dial in their preferred vibe with eight tone presets ranging from friendly to quirky, alongside fine-tuning sliders for warmth and conciseness.
The ultimate model aggregator
With over 10 million monthly active users, Perplexity keeps doubling down on its identity as the fastest aggregator in AI.
While OpenAI fights Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude directly, Perplexity simply acts as the universal layer on top. Srinivas also teased that Moonshot AI's latest model, Kimi K2, is coming very soon to the platform.
By chaining together the latest releases across top labs, Perplexity wants to make sure its premium users never feel the need to open another tab.
Why it matters
We think Perplexity's real superpower is distribution speed. Becoming the day-one home for frontier models turns its $20 monthly subscription into an easy sell for researchers and power users.
Instead of juggling multiple accounts across different labs, users get instant access to GPT-5.1 wrapped inside Perplexity's grounded search workflow. If you already rely on conversational search for daily research, testing the new variants is essentially a no-brainer.
However, this aggressive speed highlights Perplexity's biggest vulnerability. It relies entirely on APIs from companies that are building their own direct search competitors. If OpenAI decides to throttle access or prioritize ChatGPT, Perplexity's margins and latency take a hit.
Teasing models like Kimi K2 shows Perplexity knows this. It needs a diverse roster of suppliers to keep its shelf stocked, proving that in conversational AI, being the fastest aggregator is both an incredible edge and an existential tightrope.
