Perplexity brings OpenAI's o1-mini to Pro users
Perplexity just rolled out a new reasoning focus mode in beta for Pro subscribers, tapping into OpenAI's o1-mini. It is built specifically for math, puzzles, and coding tasks, though it lacks web search integration for now and runs with strict rate limits.

Perplexity just turned off web search for its newest feature.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced that the company has rolled out a new beta "reasoning" focus mode for Pro users, powered by OpenAI's o1-mini model.
Pure logic, no web results
The catch is that there is no search integration yet. Srinivas pointed out that the model is relatively slow, and usage is capped by rate limits.
According to the company, this mode is best suited for complex math, coding, and logic puzzles. If you need multi-step reasoning combined with live web search, Srinivas noted that Perplexity's standard Pro searches remain the best option for now.
Why it matters
It is telling when a company built entirely around replacing traditional web search launches a feature that completely ignores the internet. That alone highlights just how eager AI platforms are to get OpenAI's new o1 reasoning models into users' hands, even before the plumbing is fully connected.
For Pro subscribers, having o1-mini under the same roof is a handy perk for debugging tricky code or tackling math puzzles without switching apps. But without live web access, this mode offers little that OpenAI does not already provide natively. We think the real test will come when Perplexity manages to blend o1's step-by-step thinking directly into its core web retrieval pipeline.
