ChatGPT plugins are finally rolling out to Plus users

Published Reach 43

OpenAI just opened up web browsing and over 70 third-party plugins to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers as the feature enters public beta. Users can delegate tasks across travel, shopping, and PDF analysis, running up to three plugins simultaneously in a single chat. It essentially gives ChatGPT live internet access and external app hooks.

ChatGPT has spent months trapped inside a knowledge freeze, unable to see anything happening in real time. That changes this week.

OpenAI just announced that web browsing and third-party plugins are rolling out to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers over the next week. The feature is officially moving from a limited alpha to beta, bringing over 70 external plugins to anyone paying the $20 monthly subscription.

Users can turn the features on under the Beta Features section in settings. Once enabled, GPT-4 can reach beyond its training data, parse website content, crunch and visualize datasets, and handle specific consumer workflows.

An app store with rough edges

Plus users can install as many plugins as they like, but ChatGPT limits you to activating three at a time in any single chat session.

The catalog spans travel, food, real estate, stocks, and shopping. For instance, a plugin called ndricks Sports pulls and summarizes live sports coverage. Document tools like AskYourPDF and ChatWithPDF let you drop in a web link to a document and ask questions about it.

However, these early tools are clearly still in beta. In hands-on tests, ndricks Sports gave accurate game recaps but failed to provide functional links back to its sources. ChatWithPDF refused to work altogether during testing, and neither tool lets you upload local files directly from your desktop.

Why it matters

We think this rollout marks the moment ChatGPT shifts from a brilliant text generator into an actual operating system.

For regular users, it opens the door to real delegation, letting you research real-time data or summarize long online reports without switching tabs. Is it worth the $20 upgrade right now? If you need up-to-date web answers or document parsing, yes, but do not expect polished software. The failure rate on these third-party tools is visibly high.

For the broader industry, OpenAI is copying the classic platform playbook right as Google pushes hard with multimodal upgrades for Bard. Instead of building specialized vertical tools for travel or finance, OpenAI lets third parties do the heavy lifting.

The smart part is creating an ecosystem lock-in early. The risky part is control: once external tools start feeding unchecked data and broken links into an AI model, the user experience becomes fragile, and OpenAI will have to answer for whatever those third-party scripts break.
