Microsoft adopts OpenAI plugin standard, puts Bing inside ChatGPT
Microsoft just announced it is adopting OpenAI's open plugin standard across its entire Copilot lineup, while making Bing the default search engine inside ChatGPT. Developers can now build a single plugin that works across ChatGPT, Bing, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, backed by new Azure AI tooling and safety services. Why it matters: It unifies the two biggest AI ecosystems, making building and distributing AI tools far simpler.

If you've been wondering how Microsoft and OpenAI plan to divvy up the enterprise world, Build just gave us the answer: they're merging the playbook.
At its annual flagship developer event, Microsoft dropped a flurry of AI announcements designed to turn its burgeoning Copilot ecosystem into the definitive developer platform of the generative AI era.
One standard to rule all plugins
The marquee takeaway is simple: write once, run across every AI surface.
Microsoft officially adopted OpenAI's open plugin standard. That means developers can build a single plugin that works interchangeably across ChatGPT, Bing, Dynamics 365 Copilot, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
On the consumer front, Bing is now the default search engine for ChatGPT. Starting today, ChatGPT Plus subscribers will see web-grounded results complete with source citations, with free users getting access via a plugin soon. Meanwhile, Bing itself expanded its plugin roster with heavyweights like Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, Klarna, Redfin, and Zillow.
For enterprise builders, Microsoft 365 Copilot is opening up to outside extensions. Developers can leverage existing Teams message extensions or Power Platform connectors to plug into enterprise workflows. More than 50 partners—including Atlassian, Adobe, and ServiceNow—are already in the early access pipeline.
Infrastructure gets an AI overhaul
Beyond plugins, Microsoft is moving aggressively to lock in enterprise workloads at the infrastructure level.
Azure OpenAI Service, which now counts over 4,500 enterprise customers, received a new Provisioned Throughput SKU offering dedicated capacity. Alongside it, Microsoft unveiled Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning prompt flow to help engineers orchestrate, evaluate, and tune LLM workflows.
To address enterprise guardrails, the company launched Azure AI Content Safety and announced cryptographic media provenance for Designer and Bing Image Creator to verify AI-generated imagery.
Finally, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Fabric, an all-in-one analytics platform tied together by OneLake. Naturally, Copilot is injected across every layer of Fabric, letting data teams create data pipelines, write code, and build machine learning models using plain English.
Why it matters
This is a masterclass in platform leverage. By rallying behind OpenAI's plugin format, Microsoft just established an early, formidable standard for conversational interfaces, effectively telling developers they won't have to rewrite their tools for different silos.
For developers and product teams, this dramatically lowers the barrier to entry. If you already have business logic or APIs, shipping a Copilot plugin gives you immediate distribution inside Microsoft's massive enterprise footprint without building a standalone AI stack from scratch.
For the industry, it ratchets up pressure on Google. By wedding Bing directly to ChatGPT, Microsoft turns an AI chatbot into an active distribution channel for its search engine while boxing in enterprise data through Fabric and Azure.
That said, we think tying enterprise workflows so tightly to prompt-driven interfaces brings real operational risks. Reliability, hallucination guardrails, and data isolation inside shared corporate environments remain huge hurdles. Still, Microsoft's vision is crystal clear: wherever you build, AI is no longer a bolt-on feature—it's the foundation.
