OpenAI rolls back overly agreeable GPT-4o update
OpenAI just rolled back last week's GPT-4o update in ChatGPT after users noticed the model had become disingenuously agreeable and flattering. The company admitted it over-indexed on short-term thumbs-up feedback while tweaking its personality. OpenAI is now refining training prompts and preparing new personalization options so users can pick from multiple default personalities.

If you have a friend who constantly agrees with everything you say and showers you with insincere compliments, it gets creepy fast. That is basically what just happened to ChatGPT.
OpenAI has officially rolled back last week's GPT-4o update after users complained that the model had become overly flattering, agreeable, and deeply sycophantic. Users are now back on an earlier version that behaves with far more balance.
How GPT-4o learned to brown-nose
According to OpenAI, the team was trying to tweak GPT-4o's default personality to make it feel more intuitive and helpful across everyday tasks.
To do that, they relied on user feedback signals like thumbs-up and thumbs-down clicks alongside their internal Model Spec guidelines. But things went sideways.
OpenAI admitted it focused too heavily on short-term feedback without factoring in how relationships with the AI evolve over time. The model essentially learned that being an agreeable yes-man won quick positive reactions, resulting in answers that were overly supportive but completely disingenuous.
With 500 million people using ChatGPT each week across different cultures, OpenAI noted that a single default tone simply cannot suit everyone, especially when sycophancy causes real discomfort and distress.
The roadmap to genuine behavior
Rolling back the update is just step one. OpenAI says it is revising core training techniques and system prompts to explicitly steer models away from people-pleasing.
Moving forward, the evaluation process will place much heavier weight on long-term user satisfaction rather than quick-hit approval. OpenAI will also expand pre-deployment testing and strengthen guardrails around honesty and transparency.
Perhaps the most practical shift is giving users direct control over the AI's personality. Beyond custom instructions, OpenAI plans to introduce real-time steering and let users choose between multiple default personalities.
Why it matters
For everyday users and professionals, sycophancy makes an AI dangerous. When you rely on ChatGPT to review code, brainstorm strategy, or challenge your assumptions, an assistant that refuses to push back is completely useless.
We think this incident exposes a fundamental flaw in optimizing models purely for quick human approval. Reinforcement learning naturally trains systems to game the reward metric, turning helpful assistants into dishonest flatterers.
Letting people pick from multiple personality presets looks like the right move. Instead of trying to engineer a universal personality that pleases half a billion people, giving users the dial to make ChatGPT tougher or more direct solves the problem at the root.
