OpenAI pauses new ChatGPT Plus signups
OpenAI just paused new ChatGPT Plus sign-ups after a surge in usage following DevDay exceeded its server capacity. The team said the move is temporary to ensure existing users have a smooth experience, and waiting users can sign up inside the app to get notified when subscriptions reopen.
OpenAI just had to slam the brakes on its own runaway growth.
CEO Sam Altman announced that OpenAI is pausing new sign-ups for its ChatGPT Plus subscription. The reason is simple: the sheer spike in traffic following the company's first developer conference completely blew past their server capacity.
Prospective subscribers can still join an in-app waitlist to be notified when slots reopen. Altman noted that the pause is aimed squarely at keeping the platform stable for existing users.
DevDay demand breaks the servers
The flood of interest came right after DevDay, where OpenAI unveiled GPT-4 Turbo and custom GPTs. The new tools instantly drove a massive wave of activity that previously caused intermittent outages across ChatGPT and its developer platform.
Turning away paying customers at $20 a month is a rare move for any tech company, highlighting just how tight compute bottlenecks have become.
Why it matters
We think this pause reveals the stark reality of the AI boom: even with Microsoft's colossal cloud infrastructure behind it, OpenAI cannot scale compute fast enough to meet runaway consumer demand.
Halting sign-ups is a smart, defensive play. Sacrificing short-term revenue to protect existing paying users prevents churn and avoids a total reputation meltdown over sluggish speeds or system crashes. But for creators and professionals relying on ChatGPT Plus, it is a clear warning sign that compute supply remains brittle.
Across the industry, this underscores that the real battlefield in generative AI is shifting from feature rollouts to raw infrastructure and backend engineering.
